    BMW E3 Bavaria Tyres (1971–1974)

The E3 BMW Bavaria was a U.S.-market model introduced in 1971 as a simplified, more affordable version of the E3 saloon. It retained the performance of the 2500 and 2800 models but with fewer luxury features, appealing to American buyers looking for a sporty yet reasonably priced saloon. The Bavaria helped establish BMW's reputation in the U.S. for building driver-focused cars.

    Michelin Classic Innertube

    BMW E3 Innertubes

    • Our Period Fitment Guides are somewhat contradictory regarding BMW E3 innertubes. The Dunlop Guide (1971–78) suggests most E3 models used tube-type wheels that require innertubes. Michelin Guides for 1972 and 1974 list all tube-type wheels, but the 1977 guide shows most models as tubeless.
    • Earlier models more likely had tube-type wheels, while later models were more likely tubeless. To confirm your wheel-type you will need to inspect your wheels. If in doubt, fit a tube.
    • The correct innertube for 175 R14 tyres is the Michelin 14E, and the correct tube for 195/70 R14 tyres is the Michelin 14F.

    BMW E3 History

The BMW E3, also known as the BMW New Six, was a series of luxury saloon cars produced by BMW from 1968 to 1977. The E3 marked BMW's return to the full-size luxury saloon market, reasserting the brand's ambitions to compete with prestigious luxury marques like Mercedes-Benz.

The E3 was designed by Wilhelm Hofmeister, sharing a platform and mechanical components with the E9 coupe. The E3 also introduced the M30 inline-six engine, a robust and reliable motor that would be used by BMW up to the 1990s! The chassis featured independent suspension, front MacPherson struts, rear semi-trailing arms, and disc brakes all round. The Interiors were optimised for driver and passenger comfort, with high-quality materials and ergonomic seating. Interior features included power windows, optional air conditioning, and central locking.

In the USA, the E3 was offered as its own model, the 'Bavaria,' with a unique Bavaria badge. The Bavaria initially combined the 2800’s engine with the 2500’s lighter body for a performance-oriented, cost-effective option. Later models received the larger 3.0L M30 engine. The Bavaria was well-received in the U.S. for its balance of performance and value, with its European-inspired name being heralded as an example of excellent marketing. Approximately 220,000 cars were produced during the E3's run, with 71,000 units sold in the U.S.; 37,000 under the Bavaria name.

The E3 series established BMW as a serious competitor to Mercedes-Benz in the luxury sedan market, and helped solidify BMW's reputation for making excellent sporty and luxurious saloons. It also served as the foundation for the first BMW 7 Series (E23). Today the some E3 cars are highly sought-after classics, especially manual transmission and fuel-injected models like the 3.0 Si. The E3 series is valued by classic car enthusiasts for its timeless styling and driving pleasure.
