BMW 7 Series Innertubes

  • Our period fitment guides suggest that some early models from 1977–1982 may have fitted tube-type wheels that need innertubes. All 7 series cars from 1983 are listed as tubeless.
  • For 195/70 R14 and 205/70 R14 tyres, the ideal tube is the Michelin 14F innertube.
  • Tyres with a profile below 70% (e.g. 220/55 R390) cannot and must not fit innertubes!

History of the BMW 7 Series

BMW 7 Series E23

The BMW E23, produced from 1977 to 1987 as the first generation of the 7 Series, marked BMW’s entry into the full-size luxury sedan market and laid the foundation for the brand's future in the premium executive car segment. Built with 6-cylinder engines and later offering a turbocharged option, the E23 introduced advanced features such as an on-board computer, a service interval indicator, and complex temperature management systems. It was also the first BMW to feature anti-lock brakes (ABS), a driver’s airbag, and a double-link front suspension. Its successor, the E32, continued this legacy of innovation.

BMW 7 Series E32

The BMW E32, produced from 1986 until 1994, replaced the E23 and was available with straight-six, V8 (BMW’s first since 1962), and V12 engines. The launch models included the 730i/iL and 735i/iL, powered by the M30 straight-six, while the 750i/iL introduced BMW’s first V12, producing 295 hp.

In 1991, BMW introduced the M60 V8 engine, available in 4.0L (740i/iL) and 3.0L versions (730i/iL). The 740i's top speed was limited to 240 km/h (149 mph), while the 750i adhered to the "gentlemen's agreement," capping it at 250 km/h (155 mph). Both V8 engines were paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission from ZF.

Considered highly advanced, the E32 offered luxury options like integrated telephones, fax machines, electronically adjustable rear seats, and rear-passenger radio controls. The 750iL was the first car with Xenon HID headlamps, and the E32 introduced BMW's first traction control system. In 1994, it was succeeded by the E38.

BMW 7 Series E38

The BMW E38, produced from 1994 until 2001, replaced the E32 and was available with straight-six, V8, and V12 engines, including turbo-diesel options. Three wheelbase lengths were offered: short (i), long (iL), and Limousine (L7).

Technological innovations in the E38 included curtain airbags, satellite navigation (a European first), and an in-built television. It was the last 7 Series with a manual transmission. Safety and convenience features included ASC+T traction control, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), auto-leveling Xenon headlamps, side airbags, Electronic Damper Control, Park Distance Control, and power-folding mirrors.

The E38 played a key role in advancing safety, comfort, and in-car technology, influencing future luxury sedans. It was replaced by the E65 in 2001.
