What is the cheapest 600/640—15 tyre?

Dunlop historically made the budget tyre 600/640-15 Dunlop C49. However currently Dunlop don’t make any classic tyres for the road, so sadly the 6.40 H 15 Dunlop RS5 for 1960s Jaguar saloons. Currently for a MK2 Jaguar or a Daimler V8 250 saloon we would recommend 180HR15 Michelin XAS. they are a great value tyre that handles very well on these cars.

There is also a selection of cheapo tyres in the size 205/70 R15 However we would strongly recommend against fitting such a wide tyre to a car that is designed to be fitted with a 6.00/6.40-15 crossply. It will have an unpleasant effect on the handling.

What are the best 6.00/6.40H15 tyres?

Although we would suggest the best 640H15 crossply tyres are the 6.40H15 Avon Super Safety. If you are looking for tyres like a sports car such as a series 1 XKE that originally fitted 640H15 Dunlop RS5, then we would recommend the 185VR15 Pirelli Cinturato CA67. Currently for a pre-1968 E-type that is the only radial tyre that was available in period. We would also suggest it was the best tyre in the size. In 1968 Dunlop developed the 185VR15 SP Sport Aquajet which they fitted to the series 2 e type. We would still recommend fitting 185VR15 Pirelli Cinturato to these later XKE.

The other point worth mentioning is that at the same time Jaguar were fitting 205/70R15 tyres (ER/70VR15 Dunlop SP Sport) to its XJ6 Jaguar, but chose not to fit it to the e-type because it didn’t handle as well with over sized tyres. It wasn’t until they developed the V12 E-type and fitted power steering that they fitted a 205 section to the e-type.
