History of the BMW M1 Classic
In the late 1970s, Lamborghini and BMW agreed to create a production racing vehicle in sufficient number for homologation, but issues occurred, prompting BMW to make the car themselves. From 1978 until 1981, the resultant vehicle was offered to the general public as the BMW M1. It is the first mass-produced mid-engine BMW automobile; the second is the i8 plug-in hybrid sports car.
The M1 coupé was hand-built between 1978 and 1981 as a homologation special for sports car racing by BMW's motorsport division. Giorgetto Giugiaro developed the fibre glass body, drawing inspiration from the 1972 BMW Turbo concept car. The car's engineering was incomplete, a group of former Lamborghini engineers formed Italengineering, which undertook to complete the design. The engineering for the M1 was finished less than 10 miles away from the Lamborghini shop.
