History of the Lancia Flaminia

Built between 1957-1970, the Lancia Flaminia was Lancia's flagship model of the time, replacing in turn the Lancia Aurelia. The car maintained the Lancia tradition of being named after Roman Roads; being named after the Via Flaminia road that ran from Rome to Ariminum (Rimini).

The Flaminia's chassis was based on the Aurelia's, although it was greatly improved. The front suspension was redesigned with double wishbones, coil springs, telescopic shock absorbers, and an anti-roll bar. The rear suspension remained the same as on the De Dion, with a transaxle positioned in the same location as on the Aurelia. The initial Berlina was offered with either drum brakes or disc brakes; all subsequent versions utilised solely disc brakes.

  • Dougal,

While I am currently without a Flaminia PF, I have hopes (and so does my wife) of rectifying that absence at some point. Should that come to pass, I would be rather pleased that 175s were available, having put quite a few miles on undersized 165s. Were I of sufficient financial persuasion, I would simply put a set on my shelf in anticipation.

So, while I can't make promises, I would encourage Pirelli to undertake such production. While I run Michelins on original rims on my B24 Spider for display, I prefer and use Pirellis on BiMetals on the road. Both sets of which are starting to get long in the tooth.

    Best regards,

    Steve Katzman

Coincidentally enough, I am currently in negotiations with Pirelli about remaking the 175R400 CINTURATO ™ for the Lancia Flaminia. You can imagine it is not a very popular tire. I think I get one or 2 enquiries per year.

I believe it is only the Coupe models of the Flaminia that fit 175HR400 tires. I wonder if you have some idea as to how many of these cars were actually made and how many are still on the road' I think they made 5,236 Flaminia Coupe's out of which not all fitted the 175.

Anyway all things considered it looks very much like we will be getting them made by Pirelli so if you could spread the word in the Lancia Flaminia fraternity it might help make the 175HR400 CINTURATO ™ viable tire to produce.

And I suppose the good news is that for now we do have a current stock of the 165HR400 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ CA67 that was fitted to all the other Lancia Flaminia cars.
