Michelins first radial X tyres were made in the size 165SR400. They were developed in conjunction with the famous Citroen Traction Avante, and Citroen continued using the 165SR400 Michelin X through on its headline cars onto the DS and ID models.

Because these Michelin X 165SR400 radial tyres were such ground breaking technology many of the sports cars of the 1950s and early 60s started to use them, cars like Lancia Aurelia and Flaminia, and Alfa Romeo 1900, 2000 and 2600 and even some of the Ferrari 250GT models had 400mm Borrani wheels specially to suit 165SR400 Michelin X tyres. Of course it didn’t take long for other leading tyre manufacturers to take advantage of this radial technology, starting with Pirelli making their 165HR400 Cinturato CA67 in 1952. These Cinturato CA67 were a radial tyre designed for sports cars which Lancia, Alfa and Ferrari soon adopted.

For some time now Citroen Traction Avant and early Citroen DS owners who have wanted to fit white walls to their 165SR400 tyres have been forced to fit 16” white wall inserts, which of course are not the quality of a proper white wall tyre, and also of course there is a slight difference between 400 mm and 16”. However now, not only is the option of a 165SR400 tyre, but it is actually the original 165SR400 Michelin X White Wall.
