1986 Porsche 924 S

1986 Porsche 924 S

Porsche 924 1976–1988

  • The first Porsche 924 came fitted with 165-14 Tyres. We would recommend 165 HR 14 Michelin XAS on 5.5J wheels, with optional 6J wheels where we would suggest 185/70 VR 14 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36.
  • By the end of the ‘70s they generally all fitted 6”J wheels and the 185/70 VR 14 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36.
  • For 165 R14 tyres Longstone would suggest the Michelin 14D innertube.
  • 185/70 R14 tyres would best fit an Michelin 14E innertube.
  • Our period fitment guides suggest that the 924 was released on tubeless wheels throughout production. Innertubes are not required on these wheels providing your rims are in good condition.
  • One might still fit innertubes to tubeless wheels; perhaps if you fit tube-type tyres, suffer a puncture, or are not confident your rims are airtight.
  • Suggested tyre pressures for 924 with 165R14 tyres - 29psi. If your 924 has 185/70R14 tyres we suggest 26psi.
  • From the end of the ‘70s the 924 was offered with 185/70 WR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36.
  • For 185/70 R15 tyres we suggest the Michelin 15E innertube is the best fit.
  • From 1978 to 1985 some of the Porsche 924 fitted 205/60R15, for which we recommend the 205/60 WR 15 Michelin Pilot Primacy 3.
  • Tyres with a profile below 70% (e.g 205/60 WR 15 Michelin Pilot Primacy 3) should not fit innertubes.
  • The early Porsche 924 Turbo, also called the Porsche 931, fitted 185/70WR15 Pirelli Cinturato CN36, or 205/55YR16 PIRELLI CINTURATO P7.
  • By the ‘90s the Porsche 924 Turbo, 924S and 924 Sportspack could be fitted with 185/70-15 Tyres (for which we recommend the PIRELLI CN36) 195/65R15 or 205/55-16 Tyres.
  • Tyre pressures for the Porsche 924S, 924 Lux, 924 Turbo and 924 Sportspack on 15” or 16” wheels we suggest 29psi in the front and 36psi in the rear.

Porsche 924 History

From 1976 through 1988, Audi built the Porsche 924 at Neckarsulm, Germany, on behalf of Porsche. The 924, a two-door, two-plus-two coupé, superseded the 912E and 914 as the company's entry-level vehicle.

Although the 928 was conceived earlier, the 924 was the first Porsche to adopt water cooling and a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration in production. It was also the first Porsche with a conventional fully automatic gearbox.

The 924 had its public debut in November 1975, followed by a turbocharged variant in 1978. In response to increased competition, Porsche launched the 944, an improved and re-engineered variant that succeeded the 924 in the United States in 1983. Audi withdrew the engine used in the 924 in 1985, causing Porsche to put a slightly detuned 944 engine in the 924, call it the 924S, and relaunch it in the United States. The 924 was a commercial success, with over 150,000 vehicles made.
