History of the Peugeot 403

The Peugeot 403, which was produced from 1955 and 1966, was an automobile aimed at the bigger end of the small car market. The Peugeot 203's 1290 cc petrol engine was expanded for use in the 403. The straight-four engine, displacing 1468 cc, used pushrod-actuated valves, hemispherical combustion chambers, and a crossflow cylinder head to produce 65 horsepower at around 5,000 rpm.

The thermostatically regulated engine fan, which shut off when the engine temperature went below 75°C and restarted when the engine temperature rose over 84°C, was a unique feature at the time. The 403's rear wheels were driven by a manual 4-speed all-synchromesh gearbox. The gear shifter protruded from the right side of the steering column. The Peugeot 403 was superseded by the Peugeot 404 in 1960, but it stayed in production as a low-cost alternative until 1966.
