History of the Peugeot 401
The Peugeot 401 was a mid-size Peugeot vehicle that was built between 1934 and 1935. It debuted at the Paris Motor Show in October 1934 and was on show again at the 29th Paris Show in 1935. The 401 was powered by an enhanced version of the engine found in the smaller Peugeot 301 and sat between that model and the top-of-the-line 601. The 401's four-cylinder side-valve engine developed 44 horsepower at 3,500 rpm and displaced 1,720 cc. The Peugeot 401 was the first automobile to be produced as a coupé-convertible, having a retractable hardtop that could be moved and stowed beneath a reverse-hinged rear baggage hatch.
