Wolseley 16/60 History
On October 12, 1961, the Wolseley 15/60 was superseded by the Wolseley 16/60. Part of the ADO 38 series, designed by Barrista "Pinin" Farina and Sidney Goble. 63,082 cars were produced between October 1961 and March 1971.
The 1,622cc inline 4 OHV engine of the 16/60, a 4-door saloon with a classic British design, produced 90 lb-ft of torque at 2,100 rpm and 61 bhp at 4,500 rpm. The vehicle was available with a 3-speed Borg-Warner Type '35' automatic transmission as an option, or a 4-speed manual transmission.
There were several mechanical enhancements on the 16/60. To increase power and torque, the 16/60's engine was upgraded from its 15/60 predecessor to a larger capacity engine with larger valves. Revisions to spring rates and upgraded shock absorbers were among the suspension changes. For improved handling, a stabilizing bar has been added to the back and an anti-roll bar to the front. For greater stability, the wheelbase was extended by one inch and the front and rear tracks were widened by two inches.
The 16/60 managed a top speed of 81 mph (130 kph), and reached 0-60 mph in 21.4 seconds, with a potential fuel consumption of 26 mpg. The 16/60 was 4.43 m long, 1.61 m wide, and 1.50 m high, with a weight of 1,122 kg.
For ten years, the Wolseley 16/60 was produced with few modifications. The BMC planners seemed to have overlooked it and provided minimal updates. Although it was renowned for its comfortable and dependable operation, the 16/60 eventually became mechanically and aesthetically dated. The Wolseley 16/60 was phased out of production and replaced with the Issigonis-designed Wolseley 18/85.
