Radial Tyres 16"

16 inch Tyres

16 Inch Tyres
  • Through out the 1940s and 1950s the best of the sports cars in Europe fitted 6.00 – 16” tyres with a crossply carcass structure.
  • Throughout the 1950s the invention of the 16” radial tyre meant that many of these classic sportscars would be improved by fitting the 185 VR 16 Pirelli Cinturato CA67.
  • Although the London taxi fitted 16 inch 175 section tyres, these tyres are not suitable for a 1950s sports car.
  • Michelin also still make the 5.50 R 16 Michelin X for the AC Ace, one of the first cars as standard to fit 16” radial tyres.
  • Michelin also make a 185 SR 16 Michelin X which is the earliest 16” radial tyre.
  • 16” tyres became unfashionable through the 1960s but started to come back into fashion in the late 1970s as Pirelli developed the super low profile Cinturato P7 for cars like the Porsche 930.
  • The classic Land Rover and early Range Rover also fitted 16” tyres for which we have the 205 R 16 Michelin X M+S.
