Lamborghini Jalpa on PIRELLI CINTURATO P7 Tyres
Lamborghini Jalpa 1981–1988
- The Lamborghini Jalpa fitted 205/55 R16 front tyres and 225/50 R16 rear tyres.
- The best classic tyre in these sizes is the 205/55YR16 PIRELLI CINTURATO P7 and 225/50 YR 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO P7 respectively.
- The PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 was original equipment on the Jalpa and many of the fastest cars of the 70s and 80s, including the Lamborghini Countach LP400S, LP5000S, and 5000QV.
- The ideal Jalpa tyre pressure is 33-34 psi front, 36 psi rear. For high speed/load use, 36 psi front and 39 psi rear is suggested. See our Lamborghini Jalpa Fitment Guides for the raw tyre fitment and pressure data.
- Tyres with a profile below 70% (e.g., 225/50 YR 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO P7) do not use innertubes.
- In the final year of production (1987-1988), some Jalpas left the factory with 15-inch Teledial wheels that were left over from the Silhouette era. If you have one of these exceptionally rare cars we would love to know the tyre size used.

Lamborghini Jalpa History
Automobili Lamborghini went bankrupt in 1978 after poor management. Swiss industrialists Patrick and Jean-Claude Mimram took control in 1980 and bought Lamborghini for $3 million. Under the Mimrams, two new models were planned: a luxury off-roader called the LM002, derived from Lamborghini's failed military vehicle, the 'Cheetah', and a V8 Targa called the Jalpa.
The Jalpa debuted at the 1981 Geneva Motor Show, managed by engineer Giulio Alfieri. It was based on the earlier Silhouette but had updated styling and improved performance. The first Jalpa prototype was actually just a Silhouette chassis that had been repainted from bronze to silver.
The Jalpa used a steel monocoque chassis and used MacPherson and Chapman strut suspension. Campagnolo produced 16 x 7.5-inch wheels for the Jalpa using an electron alloy, and the rims paired with Pirelli P7 tyres.
The Jalpa’s V8 had 3.5 litres and had 255 bhp, with better torque than its predecessor. This extra torque contributed to the Jalpa being more practical than its relatives as it was easier to drive in low-speed traffic. It had Lamborghini’s five-speed manual gearbox and in-house differential.
Bertone created the body and interior, fusing 1970s wedge features with 1980s boxy features. The car’s Targa roof panel could be stored behind the seats. The interior included a new box-style dashboard and modernised gauges and switches. Optional extras included a Countach-style rear wing, a sports exhaust, and custom interior trim.
The Jalpa weighed about 1510 kg, managed a top speed of around 155 mph, and reached 0–62 mph in around 6.4 seconds. 13. US-spec Jalpas had 250 bhp, large side markers, and met American regulations. The Urraco and Silhouette were not even available in the US because they did not meet regulations.
The Jalpa was far more approachable for everyday driving than Lamborghini’s bigger, wilder models like the Countach. Though it was not practical overall, It offered better visibility, a lighter clutch, and a Targa roof that made it a more user-friendly and practical car compared to its relatives. By 1988, production ended after building 410 Jalpas, including 35 right-hand-drive versions.
The Jalpa helped Lamborghini recover from a difficult financial period by offering a more accessible alternative to the Countach. It was the final Lamborghini to use a V8 engine, introduced practical improvements over its predecessor the Silhouette, and made it possible for the brand to stay afloat long enough to adapt and develop other models. Although it never sold in large numbers, the Jalpa’s legacy includes a significant role in keeping Lamborghini alive and relevant during a difficult period in its history.
