Lamborghini Silhouette P300 History
The Lamborghini Silhouette P300 is a mid-engine sports car that was produced in limited numbers by Lamborghini between 1976 and 1979. The car was officially presented at the 1976 Geneva Auto Show and was initially created as a styling exercise by the renowned Italian design firm, Carrozzeria Bertone.
The Silhouette was based on the Lamborghini Urraco, but it had more angular styling and was distinguished from the Urraco by its use of a Targa top roof. It was the first Lamborghini to feature a removable roof panel, which could be stowed in the front luggage compartment. The car's design was considered a radical departure from Lamborghini's previous models and was an attempt to appeal to a broader market.
Under the hood, the Silhouette was powered by a 3.0-litre all-aluminium alloy Lamborghini V8 engine that was mounted transversely behind the driver. The engine produced 260 horsepower and was mated to a five-speed manual transmission. The car's official performance figures indicated that it could accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (0.0 to 62.1 mph) in 6.5 seconds, 0 to 100 mph (0 to 161 km/h) in 16.1 seconds, and could reach a top speed of 260 km/h (162 mph).
Only 54 units of the Lamborghini Silhouette were produced, with 12 featuring right-hand drive. Of these, 31 are currently known to exist, making the Silhouette a rare and highly sought-after collector's car. The Silhouette later evolved into the similar-looking but more successful Lamborghini Jalpa, which was produced from 1981 to 1988.
