215/60 VR15 Tyres
In 1973 with the to RS and Carrera 911 Models Porsche fitted 185/70 VR15 Pirelli Cinturato CN36 on the front moved on to a wider rear wheels to accommodate the 215/60 VR15 Pirelli Cinturato CN36 that Pirelli are now reproducing with Porsches N homologation. In 1973 when Pirelli developed this tyre a tyre as low as 60% profile was ground braking technology. This 215/60 VR15 CN36 was the first 60 profile tyre fitted to production cars.. Porsche continued to fit 215/60 VR15 tyres to the rear of cars through to the ‘80s and into the 911 SC models.
Although in period Pirelli first made their 215/60 VR15 Cinturato CN36 as tube type tyres. It wasn’t long before tyre manufacturers learnt not to fit inner tubes in tyres with a profile such as 215/60 VR15. And they only fitted inner tubes in 70% profile and above tyres. Around the same time wheel manufacturers learned to improve their rim profiles to have a safety rib making them more suited to tubeless tyres such as the current 215/60 WR 15 Cinturato CN36.
215/70 VR15
The current production of these tyres is actually a 215/60WR15 tyre. The current tyre now qualifies for a W speed rating, which wasn’t available in period. There was no 215/60WR15 tyres, in period it was VR, Hence in period the tyre had 215/60 VR15 written on its sidewall.
