Cadillac DeVille 1958–1993

1973 Cadillac Deville

1973 Cadillac Deville

  • The Mk 3 (1948 - 1953), the Mk 4 (1957 - 1958), and the Mk 5 (1954 - 1956) Series 62 Coupe De Ville fitted 820 - 15 crossply tyres. We recommend the 820 - 15 Avon Turbospeed as the best tyre in this size. We do offer the 8.20 x 15 General and 8.20 x 15 General Whitewall as a cheaper option and a whitewall option respectively. The Michelin 15/17H innertube is the right size for these tyres.
  • The Cadillac Deville continued to fit 820 - 15 when the Series 62 split into the Deville and Eldorado in 1959 until 1963 when they swapped into 8.00 - 15 until 1964. No classic tyre manufacturers currently make an 8.00 - 15 classic tyre that is road legal, 235/70 - 15 radial tyres, in particular the 235/70 HR 15 Michelin XVS is a fantastic tyre that also has a whitewall option.
  • The Deville in 1965 to 1970 fitted 9.00 - 15 crossply tyres. No classic tyre manufacturers currently make a 900-15 tyre. Instead we recommend fitting a 235/70 15 tyres as a radial alternative.
  • The Deville in 1971 to 1974 fitted L78 - 15 tyres.
  • The Deville in 1975 to 1976 fitted LR78 - 15 tyres.
  • Currently no classic tyre manufacturers make a tyre in the size L78 - 15 or LR78 - 15. For models fitting L78 - 15 and LR78 - 15 we recommend fitting 235/70-15 tyres as an alternative fitment to these sizes.
  • The Deville from 1977 to 1979 fitted GR78 - 15 tyres. Currently no classic tyre manufacturers make a tyre in the size GR78 - 15. Instead, for this size we recommend 225/70 15 tyres. The best tyre in this size is the 225/70 WR 15 Michelin XWX.
  • The Deville from 1980 to 1984 fitted 215/75 - 15 tyres. For this size we recommend the 215/75R15 Galaxy Whitewall.
  • The Deville from 1985 - 1993 fitted 205/70 - 15 tyres, the tyres we recommend for this are the 205/70 R 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN12. We recommend fitting the Michelin 15F innertube. The touring models fitted different tyres however, these being 215/65 - 15 in 1987 - 88 and 215/60 - 16 for the returning 1992 4-door model, however, unfortunately no classic tyres make a tyre in the size 215/65 - 15.

History of the Cadillac DeVille

The Cadillac Deville nameplate was first used as a trim level of the 1949 Cadillac Series 62 and would be so until 1959 when it became a standalone model in the Cadillac Range.

In late 1949 the Series 62 Coupe DeVille was introduced, it was one of the first pillarless hardtop coupes, one of three that general motors had produced at the time, the others being the Buick Roadmaster Riviera and the Oldsmobile 98. The Series 62 gained popularity over the next few years, with the DeVille being the favoured trim level of the line, accounting for just under half of all Series 62 sales in 1956, which was a record sales year for the Series 62.

In 1959, Cadillac debuted the first standalone DeVilles. These are iconic vehicles, remembered for their huge tailfins and the taillights that extended from the rear in a bullet-like shape. The 1960s DeVilles had a few distinct changes, such as the full-width grille and less chrome on the trim and lower tailfins than the '59 models. The new standalone DeVilles all came powered with a 6.4L V8 engine.
