About 205/70VR14 Michelin XWX
205/70VR14 Michelin XWX
The 205/70VR14 Michelin XWX tyre is renowned for its exceptional high-performance capabilities. Despite being labelled as 205/70VR14 tyres on the side wall, it is actually W-rated, indicating a speed rating of 270 kph or 168 mph. This high speed rating is necessary because it serves as the original equipment tyre for various prestigious vehicles such as the BMW 730, BMW 733i, Mercedes 280, Mercedes 300, Mercedes 350, Mercedes 450, Fiat Dino, Fiat Dino (Ferrari 246 GT), Ferrari 208, Ferrari 308 GT4 2+2, Ferrari 308 GTB, Ferrari 308 GTS, early Ferrari 308 GTB i/GTS i, and the front of the early Lamborghini Countach. Consequently, an extensive range of high-performance cars from the 1970s and 1980s were factory-fitted with the Michelin 205/70VR14 XWX tyre.

The design of the XWX is meticulously crafted to achieve a staggering 168 mph, earning it a coveted W speed rating. With a host of cutting-edge features, these tires deliver exceptional performance, effortlessly integrating Speed, Safety, and Comfort to create the ideal tire for 70's Supercars. The tire's robust internal construction and flexible carcass provide unrivalled comfort during high-speed journeys.
The tyre size 205/70 R 14 92W indicates:
- The tyre width is 205mm at its widest point (not just the tread width).
- The height of the tyre sidewall is 70% of 205mm.
- The tyre has an R, which means it is a radial tyre.
- The tyre has a 14, which means it has a rim diameter of 14".
- The tyre has a load index of 90, which means each tyre can carry a weight up to 600 kgs.
- The tyre is speed rated W, which means it has been successfully test driven at 168mph or 270km/h for an hour without being damaged.
Although the tyre's side wall indicates a V speed rating, it is, in reality, rated for W speed, enabling speeds of up to 168 mph. However this tyre was initially developed in the 1960s, the W speed rating had not yet been introduced. Therefore, to preserve the tyre's historical accuracy, it still retains the V designation on its sidewall.
The Ferrari Dino originally came equipped with 205/70VR14 Michelin XWX tyres. Nowadays, there are alternative tyres available in the size 205/70VR14, but none can match the superiority of the XWX 205/70VR14. It remains unrivalled as the preferred tyre for sports cars. Unfortunately, it's disheartening to observe that many Mercedes vehicles currently opting for the 205/70VR14 size compromise by choosing cheaper tyres that simply cannot offer the same level of performance. It is advisable for them to stick with the 205/70VR14 Michelin XWX.
It's important to note that as a 205/70, it has a 70% profile. Some models like the Ferrari 330GTC, 275 GTB, and the MK 10 Jaguar were equipped with a 205 VR14 Michelin XWX, which had a much taller tyre overall with a full profile. This means that the sidewall height was 80% of 205mm, compared to the 70% of 205mm in the case of the 205/70VR14 XWX.
The Overall Diameter of the 205/70 VR 14 is 644 mm and the width is 209 mm. For more information on the 205/70 VR 14 Michelin XWX please see below or call +44 (0) 1302 711 123.
