185R14 Tyres: Mercedes-Benz 280 SE on 185HR14 Michelin MXV-P Tyres

Mercedes-Benz 280 SE on 185HR14 Michelin MXV-P Tyres

Mercedes 280 SE W111 (1967–1971)

The Mercedes-Benz W111 280SE is a special-class (Sonderklasse), fuel-injected (Einspritzung) coupe and cabriolet variant of the 1967–1971 W111 chassis, with a 2.8-litre engine. Later 280 SE 3.5 Coupé and 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet models featured a larger 3.5L engine.

  • The Mercedes 280 SE Coupe and Cabriolet on the W111 chassis fitted a 7.35x14 crossply on the earlier cars. However, later cars fitted 185 R14 radial tyres; this is the size recommended today.
  • In this size, the 185HR14 Michelin MXV-P is the ideal 280 SE tyre.
  • Michelin also makes the 185 R 14 Michelin MXV Whitewall, offering an authentic classic driving experience without compromising on fashion.
  • The ideal innertube for 185 R14 tyres is the Michelin 14F.

Mercedes 280 SL Pagoda W113 (1967–1971)

The Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagoda W113 is a roadster made from 1968 to 1971, embodying the "Sport Light" ethos with its fuel-injected (Einspritzung) 2.8-litre engine and sleek design. W113 SL models were commonly set up as coupé/roadsters, featuring a soft top and an optional detachable hardtop.

  • The Mercedes 280 SL Pagoda on the W113 chassis will benefit from 185HR14 Michelin MXV-P tyres.
  • Michelin also makes the 185 R 14 Michelin MXV Whitewall, an excellent 280SL whitewall tyre.
  • The recommended tube for 185 R14 tyres is the Michelin 14F innertube.
Mercedes-Benz W108 280 Tyres

Mercedes-Benz W108 280

Mercedes 280 SEL, SE, & S W108 (1968–1973)

The Mercedes-Benz 280 S, SE, and SEL W108 (1968–1973) are luxury saloons within the "Special Class" (Sonderklasse), with the 280 SE featuring fuel injection (Einspritzung), the SEL describing a longer wheelbase ("Lang") for enhanced rear legroom, and the S model typically carbureted, all powered by a 2.8-litre engine, on the esteemed W108 chassis.

  • The Mercedes 280 S, SE, and SEL on the W108 chassis will handle at its best with the 185HR14 Michelin MXV-P or the 185 R 14 Michelin MXV Whitewall.
  • The 185 R 14 Michelin MXV Whitewall is ideal if you want white wall tyres on your W108 Mercedes 280.
  • If you want a wider tyre, we suggest the 205/70VR14 Michelin XWX.
  • The Michelin 14F innertube is the best choice for these tyres.
  • Michelin made a millimetric wheel and tyre upgrade for the W108, with millimetric wheels and 220/55 WR 390 Michelin TRX tyres.
  • The 220/55 WR 390 Michelin TRX remains the best 220/55 R390 tyre for the W108 with millimetric wheels.

Mercedes 280, 280C and 280CE W114 (1968–1976)

The Mercedes-Benz 280, 280C, and 280CE W114 (1968–1976) are executive saloons and coupes within the "New Generation" series. Equipped with a 2.8-litre engine and characterized by a monocoque chassis, these models include the 280 and 280C (Coupé) and the fuel-injected 280CE (Coupé Einspritzung).

  • The 185HR14 Michelin MXV-P or 185 R 14 Michelin MXV Whitewall tyres are perfect for the Mercedes 280, 280C, and 280CE on the W114 chassis.
  • 185R14 tyres are best fitted with a Michelin 14F tube.
Mercedes-Benz 280 SL R107 Tyres

Mercedes-Benz 280 SL R107

Mercedes 280 SL, SLC R107, C107 (1974–1985)

The Mercedes-Benz 280 SL and 280 SLC (R107, C107) are luxury sports roadster and coupe models, respectively, powered by a 2.8-litre inline-six engine. These vehicles are noted for their advanced safety features, refined driving dynamics, and durable construction within the R107/C107 series, known for engineering quality and reliability.

  • The Mercedes 280 SL R107 and Mercedes 280 SLC C107 fitted 185 R14 or 195/70 R14 tyres as standard. In these sizes, we recommend the 185 HR 14 Michelin MXV-P and the 195/70 VR 14 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36 respectively.
  • Some period fitment guides offer 205/70 R14 tyres as a low-profile alternative size. If you desire a wider tyre with a lower profile, the 205/70 WR 14 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36 or 205/70VR14 Michelin XWX are the best options.
  • The Michelin 14F is the ideal tube for these tyres.
  • Michelin developed a millimetric wheel and tyre package for R107 and C107 280 cars with 220/55 WR 390 Michelin TRX on millimetric wheels. If you have these wheels, the 220/55 WR 390 Michelin TRX is still the best tyre in this size.

The Mercedes-Benz 280 S, SE, and SEL W116 (1975–1980) are a series of luxury saloons, with SE and SEL models featuring fuel injection and the SEL offering an extended wheelbase for increased rear legroom. All variants are equipped with a 2.8-litre engine, set within the W116 chassis, known for pioneering safety innovations, including the introduction of anti-lock brakes.

  • The Mercedes 280 S, SEL, and SE on the W116 chassis are ideally suited to the 185HR14 Michelin MXV-P.
  • If you want, they can be fitted with a wider tyre; the 205/70VR14 Michelin XWX is our suggestion.
  • Our recommended innertube for these tyres is the Michelin 14F.
  • Michelin offered a millimetric upgrade for the W116, with millimetric wheels and 220/55 R390 Michelin TRX tyres. If you have millimetric wheels on your 280 S, SE, or SEL, the ideal classic tyre is the 220/55 WR 390 Michelin TRX.

W123 Mercedes-Benz 280 Tyres - Original Veith Tyres (other original tyres were Michelin XVS or PIRELLI CN36)

W123 Mercedes-Benz 280 Original Veith Tyres (other original tyres were Michelin XVS or PIRELLI CN36)

  • The very first W123 Mercedes 280 and 280 E tyre was the 195/70HR14 Veith 446, fitted from 1975–1977; this tyre is no longer produced.
  • In 1977, Mercedes also offered the Michelin XVS, which is no longer made in the correct 195/70 R14 size, and the PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ CN36.
  • We now recommend the 195/70 VR 14 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36 as the best tyre.
  • The PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ CN36 is also the only proper classic tyre in the size 195/70 R14, and it is great that it is one of the OE tyres.
  • The Michelin 14F is the best possible innertube for use in these classic tyres.
  • Michelin made a TRX for the W123, with millimetric TRX wheels and 190/65 HR 390 Michelin TRX or 200/60 VR 390 Michelin TRX tyres. Both sizes are available today, both would suit your W123.
1981 Mercedes-Benz W126 S Class

1981 Mercedes-Benz W126 S Class

Mercedes 280 S, SE, and SEL W126 (1979–1991)

Mercedes-Benz produced the W126 series of luxury saloon cars from 1979 until 1991, including the 280 S, 280 SE, and 280 SEL. 'E' models have fuel injection, whilst the 'S' models have a carbureted engine. The 'L' in the 'SEL' means Lang, denoting a longer wheelbase. Known for their comfort and longevity, W126 cars also include increased crumple zones and driver airbags, cutting-edge safety features for the day.

  • The Mercedes-Benz 280S, 280SE, and 280SEL fitted 195/70 R14 tyres. In this size, we recommend the 195/70VR14 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36.
  • Some W126 cars fitted 205/65 R15 tires as an optional upgrade. This size is still too modern for the classic range. If you need these, a modern tire shop will stock this size.

Mercedes 280 White Wall Tyres

  • Predominantly, the Mercedes 280 in all its guises came fitted with 185 R14 tyres.
  • Michelin now makes the 185 R 14 Michelin MXV Whitewall tyre for fashion-conscious drivers who don't want to compromise their performance.
  • At Longstone, we encourage the fitting of Michelin's white wall tyres to classic Mercedes, as they have an authentic classic tyre carcass structure that is well suited to a Mercedes 280 chassis.
