Datsun Cherry History
The Datsun Cherry is a subcompact car produced by Nissan from 1970 to 1986, known for its affordability, front-wheel-drive innovation, and versatility. The Datsun Cherry saw four generations spanning from 1970 to 1986 and was sold as the Nissan Cherry in some markets.
The first-generation Cherry was known internally as the E10, spanning from 1970 to 1974. It was Nissan's first attempt at a front-wheel-drive car, and its main competition was the rear-wheel-drive Toyota Corolla.
The Mark 1 Cherry was available as a 2-door and 4-door saloon, a 3-door estate, and a coupé (from 1971). Engine options were the 1.0L A10 (producing roughly 58 hp) and the 1.2L A12 (producing roughly 68 hp), with the smaller engine managing a top speed of 80 mph. In Europe, the car was advertised as the 'Datsun 100A' and 'Datsun 120A'.
The second generation (internally known as the F10) was produced from 1974 to 1978. It featured a radical boxy design as it was the first Nissan/Datsun to put an emphasis on aerodynamics. The F10 was available with a 1L, 1.2L, or 1.4L engine, as a 2-door coupé, 4-door saloon, 3-door estate, and 5-door hatchback. This car divided audiences with its design, with some lauding the car as beautiful, and others referring to the hatchback model as a 'clown shoe'.
The third generation was known as the N10, produced from 1978 to 1982. The third-generation Cherry was given a major redesign with cleaner, more streamlined body lines, giving it a more modern and refined appearance. The third-generation Cherry was available with a range of engines from 1L to 1.5L, as a 3-door and 5-door hatchback, and 4-door saloon. The MK3 had fully independent rear suspension, which was uncommon for its class.
The fourth generation was known as the N12 and was produced from 1982 to 1986. It featured a much more modern design, sharing its platform with the Nissan Pulsar and Alfa Romeo Arna. Engines ranged from a basic 1L to a 1.5L turbocharged engine for the sportier Turbo model.
The Cherry FII Coupé was noted for its beauty, however, overall, the Datsun Cherry series was known for its reliability, affordability, and technological innovation with its front-wheel drive. The Cherry is not a common classic car in the UK today, but it left a lasting legacy in the subcompact market and influenced future Nissan models with its practical design and mechanical advancements, making it a key part of Nissan's early global success.
