History of the Autobianchi Primula
The Autobianchi Primula was a supermini economy car produced from 1964 to 1970. The Primula was a prototype model for Fiat's new rack and pinion steering system as well as Dante Giacosa's innovative front-wheel-drive, transverse engine layout that would later be applied to the Fiat 128 on its success. The Primula was a sales success and then came second in the 1965 European Car of the Year awards, beating the Ford Mustang but failing to claim victory against the Austin 1800. Following the success of the Primula, Fiat adapted the steering and Giacosa designed engine layout into the 128 and garnered great success with it winning the 1970 Car of the Year award, with Autobianchi's A112 coming in second place.
