220/65 VR390 TDX Tyres
The Michelin TRX was developed in the 1970s as a millimetric wheel and tyre combination that offered the ability to create, what at the time were incredibly low-profile tyres without compromising the ride quality as much as was previously the case. The millimetric TDX was a development of the TRX which offered a limited “run on” capability after the tyre had been deflated without the tyre becoming detached from the rim, effectively the TDX tyres were an early attempt at a run flat wheel and tyre system. Tyre sizes like the 220/65 VR390 Michelin TDX were fitted to a range of Luxury cars in the 1980s.

Jaguars’ luxury car, the Jaguar XJ40 took advantage of the TD 220/65 VR390 Avon Turbospeed CR39. The Daimler XJ40 also fitted 220/65 VR390 TD CR39 Avon Tyres. In 1990 Jaguar moved the XJ40 and its derivatives away from TD220/65 VR 390 Avon TurboSpeed and fitted the PIRELLI P5 tyre that Jaguar and Pirelli had developed together to suit Jaguars luxury cars and fitted 15” wheels with 225/65 WR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO P5. Often today because of more easily accessible 15” tyres people often move away from the 390mm TDX wheels and so the 220/65 VR390 Avon tyres are a nice thing to still be able to offer.
