205/70 R 15 Tyres

The tyre size 205/70 R 15 was not actually fitted to many different classic cars as standard. From 1968 Jaguar started to fit ER/70R15 tyres to its V12 E-type with power steering and its XJ6. The tyre size ER/70R15, is simply an outdated obsolete way of saying 205/70 R 15. 205/70 R 15 tyres were also fitted to the Jensen Interceptor and Citroen SM and Maserati Merak.

In the 1970s having experienced the various alternative tyres Jensen improved the ride and handling of its flag ship cars, the Jensen Interceptor onto fitting 205/70 R 15 Pirelli Cinturato CN12. It is worth noting that Pirelli also make the 215/70 WR 15 Cinturato CN12 for the Jensen Interceptor FF.

205/70 R 15

Many cars of the 1960s fitted 185R15 tyres, such as the E-type jaguar, Ferrari 250 and Aston Martin DB5 and early DB6. In 1968 many of these manufactures took advantage of the new wider low profile tyre technology and adjusted the set up of these classic cars to fit 205/70 R 15 tyres instead. It is worth noting that in period when a manufacturer moved onto a 205/70 section from a 185 they would adjust the camber and caster settings of the car. This would often happen in conjunction with fit powered steering.

Many people with cars such as an Aston Martin DB4 and a Ferrari 250 GT/E that fitted a 185VR15 Pirelli Cinturato as their original radial tyre, would fit a 205/70 R 15 instead, because they were cheaper or they liked the look of a wider tyre. It is worth noting that the steering will not be as nimble with a 205/70 R 15. However if as is often the case you feel a car might look better with a wider tyre fitting a 205/70 R 15 Pirelli CN12, will have less derogatory effect than fitting a none period 205/70 R 15.
