When Michelin first developed radial tyre technology in the ‘40s the size 165 SR 400 was the first size. Michelin developed the X radial tyre in conjunction with Citroen’s Traction Avant, and because the Traction was on 40 cm wheels the size 165 SR 400 was radial equivalent to the 130/140X40 Crossply tyres that they originally fitted. As the advantages of the amazing new radial tyre technology became apparent so many other car manufacturers started to fit 400mm wheels so they too could fit 165 SR 400 Michelin X tyres.

Michelin X 165SR400 was fitted to the Traction Avante. When Michelin released the new X radial technology was initially offered as an option on the Traction Avante in the size 165R400 Michelin X. However it wasn’t long before 165 SR 400 or 185 SR 400 Michelin X radial tyres became standard equipment on the Traction, and it contined onto the Citroen DS which also fitted 165SR400 tyres. They were also fitted to cars such as the Lancia Aurelia & Flaminia and Alfa Romeo 1900 and 2600 with the 165 R 400 Michelin X.
