Crossply Tyres then the Dunlop Racing R5 550-16 is road legal and the only truly good crossply tyre in the size that will give good handling on dry roads.

550-16 Tyres

Though the Duinlop Racing R5 550-16 is the best crossply tyre for a fast road car. Michelin make a 550-16 X radial tyre which is H rated and was the original tyre on a AC Ace, so this is also a excellent road tyre which will offer better longevity and performance in the wet.
As a standard road tyre Avon make the 550-16 Tourist which is an excellent all round road tyre for normal usage.
