215/70VR15 Tyres
The 215/70VR15 Michelin XWX it a high quality road tyre that is also capable of withstanding extensive track use. This Michelin XWX tyre was original equipment on a wide range of exotic supercars such as Ferrari Daytona, Ferrari 330, Ferrari 365 GTC, Lamborghini Miura, Lamborghini Jarama, Maserati Bora, Maserati Indy, Maserati Ghibli. The 215/70VR15 Michelin XWX is also the correct size for Jaguar XJS V12 until 1987 and Jaguar XJ12.
The tyre size 215/70 R 15 90W indicates:
- The tyre width is 215mm at its widest point (not just the tread width).
- The height of the tyre sidewall is 70% of 215mm.
- The tyre has an R, which means it is a radial tyre.
- The tyre has a 15, which means it has a rim diameter of 15".
- The tyre has a load index of 90, which means each tyre can carry a weight up to 600 kgs.
- The tyre is speed rated W, which means it has been successfully test driven at 168mph or 270km/h for an hour without being damaged.
215/70VR15 XWX
215/70VR15 XWX Tread Pattern
The Ferrari Daytona left the Ferrari factory fitted with 215/70VR15 Michelin XWX tyres. There are other tyres available in the size 215/70VR15 but really as the proper 215/70-15 XWX is still available, and it is such an excellent tyre you wouldn’t really consider anything else.
There is also a 215/70VR15 Avon CR6ZZ tyre which is also excellent, however it is a race tyre, race tyres are built for performance over longevity and optimised for track use, not road use. Although the CR6ZZ is road legal, it is not an ideal road tyre. The 215/70VR15 XWX however is still available and speed rated up to 170mph, so is the most perfect and correct tyre to fit.
Pirelli also make a 215/70VR15 Cinturato CN12 for Maserati and Lamborghini, and a 215/70VR15 Cinturato P5 for Jaguar which are also both fantastic tyres, but for 1970s Ferrari the Michelin XWX was original equipment and is the perfect tyre.
215/70VR15 Michelin XWX Speed Rating
Despite the V speed rating imprinted on the side wall, this tyre is, in fact, W speed rated, enabling a maximum sustained speed of 168 mph. However, it's important to note that during the tyre's development in the 1960s, the W speed rating had not yet been introduced. Therefore, to preserve its historical accuracy, the tyre continues to bear the V designation.
Innertubes for 215/70VR15 Tyres
If you are fitting any 215/70VR15 tyre to a classic car with wire wheels, it should have innertubes. We would suggest the Michelin 15/17 H Innertube would be best. Innertubes can also be fitted into any 215/70VR15 classic tyre if you are not sure that the wheel is airtight.
