History of the Daimler Sovereign

Between 1966 and 1983, the Daimler Sovereign was the name of a series of premium automobiles produced by Jaguar but sold under the Daimler brand. Jaguar purchased The Daimler Company in 1960, and the Sovereign was introduced in 1966 as the second Daimler to be based on a Jaguar vehicle. The first was the 2½ litre V8, which had an Edward Turner-designed V8 engine. The Sovereign, unlike the Daimler 2½ litre, featured a Jaguar engine, signalling the end of the Turner-designed engines.

The first Daimler Sovereign was modelled on the 1966 Jaguar 420 and was dubbed the "Sovereign 420." Subsequent Sovereigns were based on the Jaguar XJ6 Series I, II, and III. The model name "Sovereign" was applied to a high-spec version of the Series III Jaguar XJ6 in 1983, with the 6-cylinder Daimler based on the Jaguar and continuing without a model designation.
