1953 MG TF

1953 MG TF

MG TF 1953–1955

  • The MG TF was equipped originally with 5.50 - 15 tyres, a size that currently does not have any appropriate tyres available.
  • If you would like to fit a radial tyre then either 155-15 Tyres or 165-15 Tyres are the best options.
  • 155 - 15 tyres are the correct width of tyre to match the original crossply, allowing for better handling and lighter steering. 165 - 15 tyres are the same diameter as the original crossplies, which will keep the gearing and ground clearance the same as if it ran on its original rubber.
  • Our recommended 155 - 15 tyre is the 155 TR 15 Michelin X.
  • Longstone's 165 - 15 recommendation for the TF is either the 165 SR 15 Michelin XZX or the 165-15 Michelin XAS.
  • The TF fitted tube-type wheels throughout its production, innertubes are required for these wheels. For these tyres the Michelin 15E innertube is the most appropriate.

History of the MG TF

The TF Midget, introduced on October 15, 1953, was a facelifted TD with the same Mark II TD engine, headlamps faired into the wings, and a sloping radiator grille hiding a separate radiator. The compression ratio of this XPAG engine was raised to 8.1:1, and extra-large valves with stronger valve springs and larger carburettors improved output to 57.5 horsepower at 5,500 rpm.

The engine size was raised by 17% to 1466 cc in mid-1954, and the engine was renamed XPEG. The bore was expanded to 72 mm and the compression was increased to 8.3:1, resulting in 63 bhp at 5,000 rpm and a 17% increase in torque. The automobile was designated TF1500 and was distinguishable from the outside by a cream background enamel plaque on either side of the bonnet, in front of the forward bonnet-release buttons. On 4 April 1955, production of 9,602 TFs, including two prototypes and 3,400 TF1500s, came to a halt with chassis number TF10100. The TF was succeeded by the MGA.
