Ferrari 400 GT Tyres 1976–1979

  • The 1976–1979 Ferrari 400 GT fitted 215/70 R15 tyres.
  • Longstone's recommended Ferrari 400 GT tyre is the 215/70 WR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO P5.
  • The PIRELLI P5 was designed for Jaguar, who wanted a high-performance tyre for luxury cars with power steering. These qualities make the P5 well suited to the Ferrari 400, even though it is not original equipment.
  • The manual gearbox Ferrari 400 GT original equipment tyre was the 215/70 WR 15 Michelin XWX. This remains an excellent, period-correct 400 GT tyre.
  • The 215/70 WR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN12 is an excellent alternative. They are also period tyres that are well-suited for the Ferrari 400 GT.
  • See our Ferrari 400 GT/Automatic Service Bulletin below to see Ferrari's recommended tyres and tyre pressures.
  • Ferrari 400 GT tyre pressures - 34 psi.

Ferrari 400 Automatic Tyres 1976–1979

  • The 1976–1979 Ferrari 400 Automatic fitted the same tyres as the GT, 215/70 WR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO P5 is recommended, the 215/70 VR15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN12 and 215/70VR15 Michelin XWX are also fantastic.
  • The 400GT and 400 automatic was released on tubeless wheels. Providing your wheel rims are in good condition, innertubes are not compulsory for these tyres.
  • If you would prefer innertubes for these 215/70 R15 tyres, the Michelin 15/17H innertube is the best option.
  • See below for Ferrari 400 Automatic Borrani Wheels.
  • Ferrari 400 Automatic tyre pressures - 34 psi.

Ferrari 400i Tyres 1979–1985

  • For the early Auto Fuel Injection Ferrari 400i (Automatic gearbox) the 215/70 WR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO P5 is recommended.
  • The 215/70 WR 15 Michelin XWX is also an excellent option. This is the original equipment tyre, and remains a good option.
  • The 400i left the factory on tubeless wheels, providing the wheels are OE and in good condition you do not need innertubes.
  • If you fit tubes to these tyres the Michelin 15/17H is the correct size.
  • Later Ferrari 400i after Chassis number 31727 (around 1982) according to Michelin or Chassis 42705 ( late 1982 ) according to the 400 Register, fit the 240/55R415 Michelin TRX . Please check which wheels you have!

  • For the 1979–1985 Fuel Injection Ferrari 400i GT with the manual gearbox, the 215/70 WR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO P5 is recommended as the ideal tyre for luxury classics of this era with power-steering.
  • The 215/70VR15 Michelin XWX is also worth considering. as it was the original equipment tyre, and boasts great performance.
  • If you desire innertubes, the Michelin 15/17H will be the best fitting tube for 215/70 R15 tyres.
  • According to Michelin, Ferrari 400i models with chassis numbers beyond 31727 (circa 1982) were equipped with 240/55R415 Michelin TRX tyres. History of the Ferrari 400

Ferrari premiered the 400GT, the successor for the 365 GT4 2+2 at the 1976 Paris Motor Show. The updated 400 was available in two models: the 400 Automatic, which used a GM THM400 three-speed automatic transmission, and the 400 GT, which used a five-speed transmission.

The Ferrari 400 Automatic was the first Ferrari to use an automatic transmission. The 365's V12 engine had been expanded to 4.8 L and given six 38 DCOE 110-111 Webers, producing 340 PS. 0-60mph took 7.1 seconds. Other differences from the 365 GT4 2+2 were five-stud wheels to replace the knock-off hubs (Borrani wheels were no longer supplied), a reworked interior, the introduction of a lip to the front spoiler, and double circular taillights.

The 400 and 400i were first distinguished by a fuel-injected engine and an "I" emblem on the rear. In 1979, Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection replaced the 400's carburettors. Power was reduced to 306 hp, the same as in the smaller 308GTBi and 308GTSi, but emissions were much improved, meeting US requirements. The fastest speed recorded was (149 mph).

The 400i was modified at the end of 1982. Engine power was increased to 315 PS thanks to new camshaft profiles and exhaust headers. The interior was extensively updated, with new upholstery, door panels, centre console, and electrical switchgear. A smaller grille revealed the rectangular fog lights on the outside, and the venting on the engine hood was changed from silver to body colour. New, more stylish wing mirrors with a tiny Ferrari shield were installed. The rear panel was body-coloured rather than matte black, and foglamps were installed in the bumper.
