Great news for classic car owners. Michelin are now making some white wall 165 SR15 XZX tyres, perfect for classic saloon cars such as the VW Beetle, Peugeot 403 and 404 and the Volvo 131 and 133. For some time there have been plenty of 165 SR15 white wall tyres, However having such a good quality 165 SR15 XZX white wall by Michelin at such a great price is great news.

At Longstone Classic Tyres we are terrible snobs. We hate to see classic European sports cars fitted with 165 SR15 white wall tyres. European sports cars such as Triumph TR4, TR5 or TR6, Volvo P1800 or any of the classic Porsche that might also fit 165 SR15 tyres. A black wall tyre looks better and a sports car will be better suited to a tyre with a more structured carcass such as the Michelin 165 SR15 XAS. The point isn’t that there is anything wrong with the 165 SR15 white wall XZX. It is a great tyre. However the carcass structure is more suited to a saloon car than a light weight rear wheel drive European sports car.
European sports cars should not fit white wall tyres!

A: The white wall 165 SR15 Michelin XZX, is great. You have all the quality control and attention to detail you expect from Michelin, with a 165 SR15 carcass that is perfectly matched to classic saloon cars.
A: A VW Beetle originally fitted 5.60-15 crossply. The standard radial equivalent to that is 155 R15 or 165 SR15. Then the later super Beetles fitted 175/70 R15 Pirelli Cinturato CN36. Currently there are a selection of white wall in these sizes, however the good news is that Michelin now make a 165 SR15 white wall XZX, which is absolutely perfect for a VW Beetle.
Maintaining White Wall or White Letter Tyres
Whitewall or raised white letters tyres will need continual maintenance; they are not a fit and forget item. You will need to keep the tyres clean, usually just with hot soapy water.
NEVER USE tyre shine products on Whitewall or RWL letters, many of these products have enhancers for black tyres that will discolour the white rubber permanently.
