History of the Alvis TB14

The Alvis TB 14 was a British two-seater open car built by Alvis cars in 1950. It was based on the running gear of the TA 14 saloon. Alvis hired AP Metalcraft, a coachbuilder in Coventry, to create the two-door open vehicle body for the TA 14 chassis. The automobile had dramatically cut-away door tops on the rear-hinged doors, as well as very long sweeping front wings and a fold-down windscreen. The radiator grille was a contentious item since it was pear-shaped, with bottom side bulges covering the headlights, which were thus a long way from the side of the automobile. The front sidelights were positioned in the bumpers. There were variants with both right and left-hand-drive.
By adding twin SU carburettors, the 1892 cc engine was modified to generate 68 horsepower, 3 horsepower more than the saloon engine. The TA 14 suspension was kept with its all-around non-independent leaf springs. Because the car was lighter than the TA 14, the final drive ratio was altered from 4.3:1 to assist enhance top speed while also increasing fuel efficiency. The car managed a top speed of 80 mph, but its expensive price of £1,276 (£44,851 adjusted for inflation - October 2021) in the domestic market hindered sales.
