1949 Allard L
Allard L & M 1946–1950
- The original equipment on an Allard L was a 625 - 16 crossply tyre, however, this is a rare size and currently, no classic tyre manufacturers make a tyre in this size. The alternative crossply fitment for this size is 6.00 - 16. The best tyre in this size is the 6.00 - 16 PIRELLI STELLA BIANCA, this offers great directional stability and has a V speed rating, which is the highest speed rating you can get in this size.
- The best radial alternative to the size 6.00 - 16 is 185-16. The best tyre in the size 185 - 16 is the 185 VR 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67. This offers lighter steering from a radial tyre (albeit the steering won't be as light as what you'd get from a crossply tyre). With this tyre, you get high performance, all whilst still retaining the stunning period look.
- The Allard L left the factory on tube-type wheels with innertubes. For these tyres the Michelin 16F would be the best fitting innertube.
History of the Allard L & Allard M
The Allard L, which was manufactured between 1946 and 1950, was essentially an Allard K1 with a six-inch longer wheelbase. After 1949, the Allard M had coil-sprung suspension and a column gear-change. The majority of UK versions were equipped with Ford Pilot engines, while those sold overseas were left without a powertrain, allowing a more appropriate local engine to be installed.
