History of the Alfa Romeo 2600

The Alfa Romeo 2600 was the company's six-cylinder flagship from 1961 until 1968. It was the replacement for the iconic Alfa Romeo 2000. It is historically important since it was the final Alfa Romeo to be equipped with an inline six-cylinder engine with dual overhead camshafts. This was the typical Alfa Romeo engine layout since the 1920s, but it lost way to four-cylinder engines as the firm shifted its manufacturing after WWII to more affordable mass-produced vehicle types.

The 2600 debuted at the 1962 Geneva Motor Show as a saloon with a factory-built body, a two-plus-two seater convertible with Carrozzeria Touring bodywork, and a Coupe with Bertone bodywork. Bertone debuted a convertible based on the Alfa Romeo Sprint coupe in 1963. It was also known as the Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint, although it was never produced. The 2600 SZ with Zagato fastback coupe bodywork and the limited-edition 2600 De luxe with Officine Stampaggi Industriale six-window saloon bodywork were presented three years later at the Frankfurt auto show in 1965.

The classic Alfa Romeo 2600 Berlina did not outsell the 2600 Sprint and Spider, despite the fact that most Alfa Romeo Berlinas in the marque's history outsold the more specialised sports versions in the same range.

The original 2600 Sprint left a bigger impression. It was a big grand touring coupe that could comfortably accommodate four passengers on lengthy travels at fast speeds! As a result, it was not unfairly compared to other models in the vintage Alfa Romeo lineup, none of which could directly compare to it. In that mode of operation, oriented more toward fast touring than sporty driving as in a classic Alfa Romeo, the agility and handling balance of the smaller Alfa Romeos became less important, while the larger car's stability and smoother ride, as well as the wide power and torque band of the six-cylinder engine, became desirable.

Combined with the increased size and comfort, these advantages formed a compelling argument for the vintage Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint. The car also carried on the crisp, futuristic design of its predecessor, the 2000 Sprint, which helped it become the best seller in the 2600 series. That design was the product of Giorgetto Giugiaro's first major project as Carrozeria Bertone's head designer, and it is widely regarded as one of the most important designs in the history of classic Alfa Romeo aesthetics.

The Italian government acquired a number of Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprints that were particularly fitted and modified to be used as police cars, and they were dubbed "Pantera" and "Gazzella" after the insignia of their rapid intervention squads. The cars were ideal for high-speed pursuits to combat the rise in armed robberies by motorised gangs in 1960s Italy, and they appeared in a number of films at the time.
