History of the Maserati 3500GT

The Maserati 3500GT is a 2 door coupe made by Maserati of Italy, it was the Italian company's first attempt at breaking into the GT (Gran Turismo) market, and the first time Maserati had invested in large volume production.

The most successful racing car for Maserati at the time was the Maserati 250F. It was introduced in 1954 and with many a famous racing driver at the wheel Maserati became an a force to be reckoned with in motor racing. As Maserati were profiting from this success they introduced a de-tuned version of the Maserati 250F engine into the Maserati 3500 GT. This was a 3.5 litre double over head cam (DOHC) straight six equipped with three side draft two barrel carburettors giving the Maserati 240 BHP and a top speed of 145mph.

The Maserati 3500 GT was produced from 1957 through to 1964 and around 2000 examples were made. Design was handled by Carrozzeria Touring and took many styling cues from the Maserati A6G54. Prior to Maserati producing the 3500GT the company had produced only 140 cars in a ten year span and Maserati soon found themselves panicking as racing and competition had drained nearly all their funds. So Maserati become a mass production company and it is widely accepted that the Maserati 3500GT saved the company and allowed Maserati to continue it's racing efforts and to design and develop the now famous Maserati Birdcage.

In March 1957 the Maserati 3500 GT was unveiled to the public at the Geneva motor show. Two prototypes were shown: one was designed by Touring and the other by Allemano, the Touring design was a 2+2 coupe. This was the design selected by Omer Osri for production. There were detail changes made to the headlights, radiator grill, and the dash board before production began but for the most part the original design remained unchanged.

During the cars production life span many improvements were made. In 1960 front disc brakes became standard and the four speed gear-box was replaced by ZF five speed gearbox. In 1961 Maserati decided to fit disc brakes to all 4 wheels and in 1962 Maserati added Lucas fuel injection which gave another 15hp.
