600 H 16 Avon Turbospeed
600H16 Tyres
600H16 tyres were very popular tyres for the top not cars of the '50s. Cars such as Aston Martin DB 2/4 and Aston Martin DB4 fitted the 600H16 Avon TurboSpeed. This particular Avon 600H16 is H speed rated. In period this same 600H16 tyre was capable of a V speed rating. The 600H16 Avon TurboSpeed is still of as good quality as it was back in the '60s the difficulties are that the goal posts have moved when it comes to speed rating cars.
600H16
600H16 is a cross ply tyre. often a lot of the cars that would have fitted a 600H16 want to fit a radial alternative to make their car more suited to today's roads. A 185R16 is a radial alternative to a 600H16, but as you can see from the picture above some modern radial tyres have a very different shape to a 600H16 crossply. On the left is the 185VR16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™. This is a genuine period tyre that you could specify in the day from Aston Martin for fitment to your DB4 instead of the standard 600H16 Avon TurboSteel crossply which is shown in the middle of the picture. The only other period tyre available as a radial alternative to 600H16 is the Michelin X 185SR16.
Avon Turbospeed
Avon Turbospeed tyres are synonymous with the 1950s sports car crossply tyres that Aston Martin used (when not fitting radial Cinturato tyres) to cars like the DB2 with this 6.00H16 Turbospeed, and the 6.70V15 Avon Turbospeed would be the standard crossply tyre for the fabulous Aston Martin DB5. Avon and their Turbospeed also held a close relationship with Rolls Royce, where a Silver Cloud would often leave the factory fitted with a 8.20 H 15 Avon TurboSpeed, and the first of the Silver Shadows would fit a 8.15-15 Avon Turbospeed.
When Avon Moved into radial tyres they slightly changed the name Avon Turbosdpeed to Avon Turbospeed, to signify the steel bracing in the tread. The name Avon Turbospeed was re vitalised for the 220/65 VR 390 Turbospeed CR39 for the Jaguar XJ40 and the re vamping of the 205/70-15 Turbospeed CR28.
The great news today is that the range of classic tyres produced by Avon today which includes some important sizes of Turbospeed and the later radial Turbosteel are still manufactured in the UK today.

Its the correct tyre for my classic car. I think it is of average quality for a crossply tyre.

Not the best performance tyre but as this is an important historic car it needs a period tyre as delivered.

In my opinion far better than the Dunlop equivalent\nConsumption if fitted on front wheels is rather high on my XK120 though....
