NSU RO 80 Orange
NSU Ro80 1967–1977
- The original tyre for the NSU Ro80 is the 175 HR 14 Michelin XAS and is recommended by Longstone Tyres.
- The Michelin XAS in period was an expensive tyre. Car manufacturers only fitted it because it dramatically improved the handling of the Ro80.
- The Asymmetric carcass and tread of the XAS improves the directional stability of a classic car.
- People often fit modern, low-profile tyres, because they are cheap, but it compromises the handling of the NSU significantly.
- Wide low-profile, or modern section square shoulder tyres will cause an NSU Ro80 to track on rutted dual carriageways.
- If you want a lower-profile tyre the 195/70 VR 14 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36 provides the benefits of a lower-profile tyre while maintaining the classical construction and rounded shoulders required for classic cars.
- The Ro 80 fitted either steel or aluminium wheels; steel wheels are suitable for tubeless tyres, but the aluminium wheels require innertubes to function.
- If you need innertubes for 175R14 tyres we suggest an Michelin 14E innertube.
- If you require innertubes for 195/70R14 tyres we suggest an Michelin 14F innertube.
History of the NSU Ro 80
Built between 1967 and 1977, the NSU Ro 80 was a technologically advanced large 4-door sedan that was front-wheel drive with a semi-automatic transmission. Due to construction faults in the engine, however, it soon gained a reputation for unreliability, that led to problems with NSU's finances and its acquisition by Volkswagen in 1969, despite it being voted Car of the Year in 1968.
