Citroen SM 1970–1975

Citroen SM at Longstone - 205/70 VR 15 Michelin XWX tyres

Citroen SM at Longstone being treated to some 205/70 VR 15 Michelin XWX tyres

  • The recommended Citroen SM tyre is 205/70 VR 15 Michelin XWX. There are other tyres in this size but none of them suits the Citroen SM the way the XWX does.
  • When the Citroen SM first came out it ran on carburettors. These first Citroen SM carburettor models actually fitted 195/70 VR 15 Michelin XWX which are no longer available. The tyre to fit now to the carburettor Citroen SM is the 205/70 VR 15 Michelin XWX the same as the SM 2.6 Injection and the SM 2.9 injection models.
  • When the injection model SM was introduced in 1972 the only change other than the engine that would affect the car's drive was the introduction of slightly larger tyres. So the earlier SM carburettor models are improved by fitting the 205/70 VR 15 Michelin XWX. This size is also appropriate for the Citroen SM Chapron Mylord and Citroen SM Chapron Opera.
  • A Citroen SM had tubeless wheels and the XWX tyres are also tubeless. However if you want innertubes for whatever reason, we suggest the Michelin 15F innertube.
  • Suggested tyre pressure for a Citroen SM is 34 PSI front and 30 PSI rear.

Citroën SM History

1969-1970 Citroen SM Specifications

1969-1970 Citroen SM Specifications

The Citroen SM is a high-performance coupé manufactured by Citroen from 1970 to 1975. The SM finished third in the 1971 European Car of the Year competition, following only the Citroen GS, and won the 1972 Motor Trend Car of the Year title in the United States.

Citroen began construction on 'Project S,' a sports derivative of the Citroen DS, in 1961. Many running concept cars, progressively complicated and upmarket from the DS, were developed, as was common for Citroen. It progressed from building a quicker variation of the 1955 DS to producing an altogether new, extensively constructed automobile – in terms of technical effort, a successor for the high volume DS model – at some point during the 9-year project.

The result was the Citroen SM, which debuted in March 1970 at the Geneva Motor Show. In September of that year, it was released in France. All factory-built cars were left-hand-drive, while RHD modifications were performed in the UK and Australia. Automotive journalists were astounded by the ability to ride the SM at 124 mph for hours in comfort. The SM won its first competitive outing, the arduous Rallye du Maroc in 1971. Citroen kept rallying the SM, finally producing a "breadvan" racing derivative with a short wheelbase.

This automobile was uncommon for France since manufacturing of luxury vehicles in the nation had been severely constrained by the country's post-World War II puissance fiscale horsepower tax, hence France had not had a production vehicle in this market area since before World War II. Due to these constraints, the SM featured a 2.7-litre engine; it was the first reaction to the luxury/performance market since the export-oriented Chrysler V8 engine Facel Vega in the late 1950s. Citroen's flagship car battled against high-performance GTs from various countries and manufacturers at the time, including Jaguar, Lotus, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche.
