185R16 Avon Turbosteel
You can see from this picture of a DB4 that the 185R16 Avon TurboSteel is too small in diameter really as a replacement for a 6.00-16, hence we suggest fitting the genuine period classic tyre the 185R16 Pirelli Cinturato, as it fits better and is more of a correct size.
When the 185R16 Avon Turbosteel came out in the 1980's as a modern tyre in the classic tyre size 185R16, It is cheaper than the genuine period 185R16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ CA67 which at the time was the only V speed rated radial tyre in the day. As a road tyre for a 1950s vintage car, the Pirelli Cinturato 185R16 CA67 will make a much nicer handling tyre, as its carcass structure is better suited to the historic set up of old cars chassis. The Cinturato will give lighter faster more precise steering and more progressive handling.
185R16 Tyres
Currently if you want a budget track day tyre in the size 185R16 then the Avon Turbosteel offers excellent value for money. It is a little lower in diameter and fatter in foot print than a period tyre should be, which is part of what makes it such a good track day option for classic cars.
Other options of tyres in this size would be 185 SR 16 Michelin X which offers exceptional value. 6.00 R 16 Michelin Pilote X which would be the highest specified vintage tyre in this size. Looking like the historic Englebert tyre it is a great track and high speed usage tyre. Then probably the 185VR16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ as the only V rated genuine period tyre and of course the CINTURATO ™ is the radial tyre that was used by most of the top performance car manufacturers of the 50s and 60s.
185R16 Inner tubes
The majority of 185R16 classic tyres will often befitted to wire wheels in which case they will need some inner tubes. We would suggest the best inner tube for a 185R16 classic tyre would be a Michelin 16 F RET.
