  • Some of the early Volvo Amazon's that left the factory would have fitted crossply tyres in the size 590 - 15 Tyres or 600 - 15 Tyres, whilst the estate cars mostly fitted 640 - 15 Tyres.
  • If you want to stay crossply on an early Amazon we suggest the 590 H 15 Avon Turbospeed fitted with a Michelin 15E innertube.
  • The ideal 640 - 15 crossply is the 640 H 15 Avon Super Safety.
  • For 640-15 tyres we recommend the Michelin 15F Offset Valve inner tube.
  • Crossply tyres however are less suited to modern high-speed roads, and on the earlier Amazons, you may prefer to fit one of the radial tyres mentioned below.
  • The majority of Volvo Amazon cars fitted 165 HR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67 and this would still be the best tyre to fit to any of these cars today.
  • It should also be noted that many of the Volvo Amazon might have a tyre from a different manufacturer depending on the country for which it was produced.
  • For an alternate option Michelin also produce a 165 SR 15 Michelin XZX which is also a great tyre to fit to an Amazon and the price is exceptionally good, but it does have a lower speed rating than the CINTURATO.
  • For these tyres we recommend the Michelin 15E inner tube.
  • Inner tubes are not essential for most radial tyres, but they can still be an option, depending on your wheels. For more information, see our inner tube guide.

History of the Volvo Amazon

Built between 1956-1970, the Volvo Amazon was a mid-sized car that came as a 2-door coupe, 4-door sedan and 5-door station wagon (estate). It is notable as being the first car to feature front seat belts as standard equipment, also later becoming the first car to feature three-point seat belts. Initially called the Amason, German motorcycle company Kreidler had already registered the name whereupon it was agreed to be called Amason within Sweden before changing the spelling to Amazon, then finally changing to the three number naming system and becoming the 120 Series.

The Amazon's original specs were a new Volvo B16 engine, a 3-speed manual gearbox (H6), and rear-wheel drive. The Amazon Sport, a sports variant, was introduced in 1958, and later that year, the Amazon became the first series-produced automobile to include a three-point safety belt in the front seats as standard. Volvo launched a two-door variant, a five-door waggon, and the new B18 engine in 1962, eliminating the two-tone paint and upholstery. Amazon colour-coordinated embossed vinyl upholstery and door panels were introduced in 1965. The three-speed M30 (briefly available with an automated electric clutch), four-speed M40, and M41 with four-speed and overdrive were the new gearbox options.

The M31 gearbox was launched in 1961 as well, however, it was only available that year (a three-speed fully synchronised gearbox with overdrive on both second and third direct gears). The M30, M31, and M40 gearboxes were available on the 121, while the M40 and M41 gearboxes were available on the 122S. The Borg-Warner BW35 three-speed automatic transmission was added to the four-door and two-door models in 1964. The BW35 was also offered in a five-door waggon from 1967 to 1968.
