- The MG Y-Type initially came fitted with 5.25 - 16 tyres.
- We would suggest the 5.00/5.25 x 16 Avon Tourist for the initial MG YA & MG YT.
- For sporting models or hard driving, a set of 500/525-16 PIRELLI STELLA BIANCA tyres would be better suited.
- Early Y type MG on 16” wheels want Michelin 16E innertubes.
- MG YA tyre pressure - 24 psi front and 26 psi rear.
- MG YT tyre pressure - 25psi front and 28psi rear.

MG YB Tyres
- After The MG YA And the Y Series Tourer the MG YT, The later MG YB fitted 15” wheels.
- The MG YB fitted 5.50- 15 or 5.90-15 crossply tyres. For crossply we suggest the 590 H 15 Avon Turbospeed.
- MG YB tyre pressures: 24 psi front and 26 psi rear.
- We would suggest that the best radial alternative for the YB would be the 165 HR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67.
- For and MG YB on radial tyres we suggest 28 psi front and 30 psi rear.
- We suggest the Michelin 15E innertubes for the later Y-type MG YB.

History of the MG Y
The MG Y-Type is a British car manufactured by MG from 1947 to 1953. It was available in a four-door saloon and open four-seat tourer configurations. When manufacture ended, there were 8,336 "Y" Types made, 6,131 of which were "YA" saloons, 904 "YT" Tourers, and 1,301 "YB" saloons. The engine was a single carburettor variant of the 1,250 cc engine seen in the more recent MG-TB. The XPAG engine went on to propel the MG-TC and MG-TD models. The MG Y Type saloon produced 46 bhp at 4,800 rpm while the YT Tourer that sported a higher lift camshaft and dual carburettors produced 54 bhp. The "Y" Type had more power than most British saloons of comparable size, with the exception of the Rover Ten, which added 2 bhp. Indeed, several manufacturers were still building side valve engines at the time.
The interior decor and finish of the MG "Y" Type were of the highest quality, in keeping with the greatest British traditions. The front surfaces of all seats, as well as the door pockets, were entirely leather. The rear of the front seats, as well as the door panels, were constructed of Rexine, a kind of leathercloth that matched the leather fronts. In 1951, the British magazine The Motor tested an MG Y that had a maximum speed of 69.6 mph and could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 29.9 seconds. The fuel usage was 29.5 miles per imperial gallon. The test vehicle cost £880 incl. taxes.
