This gum dipped Firestone 440/450X21 Firestone tyre is one of the tyres that Ford sometimes fitted to their Model A Ford cars up until 1929. However at the time it was just called a 440X21 Firestone. This is also a popular tyre for early Austin 12/4, Lagonda and Sunbeam cars.4.40/4.50X21 tyres
Back in the '20s there would have been more demand for tyres of this size so manufacturers like Firestone might have made 2 tyres, a 440X21 and a 450X21. However today the demand doesn't require that many tyres so instead of making a 440-21 and a 450-21 they make the 440/450-21 to cover both sizes.Back in the '20 many cars fitted Beaded Edge Tyres, which were unreliable in the day. Driving on tarmac, as we do today has only really made things worse. So often cars on Beaded Edge Tyres will want to change to a standard well based cross ply tyre like a 440X21 or a 450X21. Currently if you want to change your car from Beaded Edge Tyres of the size 815X105 then the Firestone 440/450X21 would be an ideal alternative.
