Pirelli make their 205/55YR16 tyre in the historic P7 tread pattern. In the day the 1970s and 1980s the YR speed rating had not yet been invented. Back in those days this tyre was called 205/55 VR 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO P7. Modern tyre marking would mean the tyre would be written up as 205/55 YR16, but for the sake of keeping these tyres looking as period as possible it is still marked up as it was in he day, 205/55VR16 PIRELLI CINTURATO P7.


205/55 YR 16 Tyres


The tyre dimension 205/55 YR 16 means:-

  • 205mm wide at the widest part of the tyre (not just the tread width).
  • 55% of 205mm is the height of the tyre side wall.
  • YR = 186mph or 300km/h speed rated radial tyre.

    From 1985 Porsche started to offer 16” wheels as an option on it’s 911. Fitting the new 205/55YR16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 N on the front and 225/50 YR 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 N on the rear of the Porsche 930 Turbo, 911 Carrera Coupe, 911 Sport, 911 Targa, 911 Targa Sport, 911 Cabriolet & Cabriolet Sport.

    From 1986 the 911 Turbo & Turbo Sport, fitted 205/55YR16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 N on the front with a 245/45 YR 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 N on the rear. In 1987 this set up with the larger rears moved onto the 911 Carrera Supers Sport, 911 Targa, 911 Coupe & Cabriolet.

    This 16” P7 set ups became common place towards the end of the ‘80s on most of the Porsche 911 range and into the 964, 968 and even 993 range of the early ‘90s. The 205/55R16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 N is also an option for the mid ‘80s 924 S and was also the front tyre on Porsches 944 Lux, S, Turbo, S2 and Cabriolet models from the mid ‘80s into the ‘90s.

    205/55VR16 Ferrari Tyres


    The Ferrari 308 offered a 16” wheel set up, which became standard with the 328 Ferrari. These cars had 205/55VR16 Goodyear NCT Gatorback on the front, and 225/50 VR16 Goodyear NCT Gator back on the rear. However Goodyear don’t make classic car tyres, so the OE Ferrari 308 GTS qv, Ferrari 308 GTB qv and Ferrari 328 16” tyres are no longer available. Happily in period Ferrari in period listed the Pirelli P7 as a recommended alternative for their 16” tyre set up. Currently your Ferrari 308 or Ferrari 328 fitted 16” wheels can benefit from fitting 205/55YR16 PIRELLI CINTURATO P7 front and 225/50 YR 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO P7 on the rear.

    The early Ferrari 308 originally fitted 205/70VR14 XWX then the Ferrari 308 GTBi and 308 GTSi and qv models fitted TRX wheels and 220/55 VR 390 TRX.

    A: The first Porsche 944 fitted 185/70VR15 Pirelli Cinturato CN36 on the front and 215/60VR15 Pirelli CN36 on the rear. However they soon offered 16” wheels with 205/55VR16 Pirelli Cinturato P7 225/50 VR16 P7 on the rear. From 1990 some Porsche 944 series 2 & the Porsche 944 Turbo fitted 245/45 YR16 P7 on the rear, still with the 205/55YR16 P7 on the front.

      Been looking for the old tread pattern Pirelli P7 for years and did not know they had started to make them again for various 70's and 80's performance cars. Great to find them again to maintain the original look.
