History of the Datsun 260Z (Nissan S30)

Though it was initially known as the Nissan s30, it was sold in Japan as the Nissan Fairlady Z and in other markets as the Datsun 240Z, then subsequently as the 260Z and 280Z, and was manufactured from 1969 to 1978. Mr Yoshihiko Matsuo, the head of Nissan's Sports Car Styling Studio, led the design team.

The left-hand drive variant was designated as HLS30, whereas the right-hand drive type was designated HS30. The Nissan Z GT 2-seater coupes were the first generation. The 260Z was said to have a few modifications or enhancements over the 240Z. The chassis improved stiffness due to a change in the chassis rails, which were larger and stretched further back than in previous models. In addition, a rear sway bar was fitted. The inside of the 260Z was upgraded, with a new dashboard and console, as well as new seat trim and door panels. The backup lights were relocated from the main tail light housing to the rear panel to modernise the taillights.
