History of the Vauxhall 23-60

The Vauxhall 23-60 is a four or five-seater touring automobile introduced in July 1922 by Vauxhall.   It shared many components with the much more powerful Vauxhall 30-98. The engine is essentially the four-cylinder engine from the previous 25 hp car, which chief engineer C E King had modified by adding an overhead valve head and because such large engines now typically had six cylinders for smoothness, the harmonic balancer devised by Dr F W Lanchester at the centre point of its crankshaft.

There is a gear-change lever on the right. The clutch's thrust and withdrawal races must be lubricated by hand, and access requires unscrewing the aluminium front floorboards, however, the gearbox has a rapidly removable filler. The suspension was provided by half-elliptical springs in front and behind the vehicle. The multi-plate clutch is made of graphite and is connected by a fabric joint to the 4-speed gearbox and subsequently to the spiral-bevel driven rear axle, which is held in place by torque girders.
