Rover P3 Tyres

  • The Rover P3 60 left the factory fitted with 525 - 17 tyres, and the Rover P3 70 left the factory with 550 - 17 tyres.
  • These two sizes are effectively the same, so our recommendation in either size is the 5.25/5.50 x 17 Avon.
  • Another good option would be the 5.25/5.50 x 17 Lucas, a great value tyre with a period tread.
  • The correct tube for a tyre of this size is the Michelin 17/18E innertube.
  • Some 1949 models of both the 60 and the 70 were fitted with 575 - 16 tyres, which is effectively very close to 6.00 - 16. This opens up a bigger variety of tyres:
  • The best crossply tyre available in this size is the 6.00-16 PIRELLI STELLA BIANCA.
  • The radial expression of this size is 185 R16, and in this size we can offer the 185 VR 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67, or the 185 SR 16 Michelin X.
  • The ideal tube for these tyres is the Michelin 16F innertube.
  • The Rover P3 fitted tube-type wheels throughout its manufacture; innertubes are required for these wheels to function, even if you fit tubeless radial tyres.

History of the Rover P3

The Rover P3 was a short-lived design that would be swiftly superseded by the Rover P4, however, 9111 would be made. It was available in two versions: the P3 60 with a four-cylinder 1595cc engine and the P3 70 with a six-cylinder 2103cc engine. The automobiles were costly, with the Rover 60 costing £1080 and the Rover 75 costing £1106, and with early post-war manufacturing issues and material shortages, it was never envisaged that the cars would be mass-produced. At the end of September 1949, the automobile was superseded by the all-new Rover 75 (P4), which was built until 1959. There would be 1274 '60' models produced and 7837 '70' models produced in all.
