Lancia Aurelia 1950–1958

  • The first Lancia Aurelia originally fitted 165 SR 400 Michelin X. That would be the early B10, B21, B50 & B51 Aurelia.
  • From 1952 the 165HR400 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67 was an option on cars like the Aurelia B12.
  • The 165HR400 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67 was fitted to the more sporting Lancia Aurelia, such as the B24 and B20.
  • Cars of this era fitted wheels that require innertubes. We would suggest fitting the 16E innertube in your Aurelia wheels.

History of the Lancia Aurelia

In 1950 the Lancia Aurelia was introduced to the public at the Turin Motorshow. Designed by Vittorio Jano, it bristled with innovation. Under the four-door, pillar-less saloon body, the Aurelia sported an all-alloy V6 engine. The four-speed transaxle, complete with in-board brakes and column gear change, ensured good weight distribution, while the all-independent suspension, via sliding pillars/coil springs at the front and semi-trailing arms at the rear, together with the then revolutionary 165x400 Michelin radial tyres, guaranteed fantastic road-holding and handling. The Lancia Aurelia was the first car to race at Le Mans on radial tyres with the Michelin X tyres in 1951. A few years later the PIRELLI CINTURATO â„¢; 165x400 was offered for the Aurelia as a more sporting, progressive tyre, now made with a higher speed rating.

The B10 Berlina was the first in the Aurelia series. A 1574 cc engine producing over 60 horsepower provided the power. The automobile was initially criticised for its (lack of) performance, therefore Lancia responded by introducing the B21 a year later. The 1574 cc engine was replaced with a 1991 cc engine producing 70 horsepower, leaving nothing to distinguish the B10 from the B21. In the same year, a B20 GT Coupe was developed to offer athletic flair. Ghia's Boano developed the two-door coupe. Ghia owner Mario Felice Boano's son was Gianpaolo Boano.

Pininfarina was in charge of production. It had a shorter chassis and a tweaked version of the 1991 cc engine that produced 75 horsepower. With only 500 samples created, production was limited. A second coupe series was developed, with a modified version of the 1991 cc engine delivering 80 horsepower. Mechanical upgrades included upgraded brakes and reduced suspension, both of which resulted in improved performance. Interior styling alterations were primarily limited to the instrument panel, which was the most visible.

Lancia released the B20 Coupe, the third model in the series, in 1953, with a 2451 cc engine delivering roughly 120 horsepower. This was the first time the Aurelia could be purchased in left-hand drive. The independent rear suspension could not manage the greater power from the new engine, so it was replaced with a de Dion system. There were 720 instances made.

The B12 was one of the first major mechanical and visually significant upgrades to the Aurelia since its creation. The engine was a 2266 cc unit with 87 horsepower. The rear suspension was replaced with a de Dion arrangement. Windshields were installed on the windows, and the headlights were replaced. Around 2400 copies were made during its production run. The B24 Spider was first shown to the public at the Brussels Motor Show in 1955. Lancia had commissioned Pininfarina to create a small number of vehicles with a shorter wheelbase from the B12. A 2451 cc engine provided propulsion. Later, a convertible was created and rapidly proved popular, with 521 Convertibles and 240 Spiders made. The Berlina's manufacture ended in 1955. The Coupe and Convertible models were produced until 1958. The coupe was available in six different series. The fifth series shifted away from performance increases and toward luxury.

1957 Lancia Aurelia Series 4 on PIRELLI CINTURATO 165HR400 CA67

"Hi, I run Michelins on original rims on my B24 Spider for display, I prefer and use Pirellis on BiMetals on the road. Both sets of which are starting to get long in the tooth. Do you have stock?"

"Hi, The good news for Aurelia owners is that we do currently have stock of the 165HR400 CINTURATO â„¢ CA67 tires that I believe were fitted to the sports models of the Aurelia.

We also have stock of the Michelin X. The tires that Lancia fitted to the more pedestrian Aurelia models."

Q: What is the right tyre pressure for a Lancia Aurelia B22?

A: the various different models of Lancia Aurelia had different tyre pressures, the chart above hopefully will fill you in on any of the details regarding your specific model.

Q: What was the original tyre size for a Lancia Aurelia?

A: The Lancia Aurelia was one of the first cars to fit radial tyres as standard equipment. In those early days of radial tyres, Michelin just made them to be fitted onto 400mm wheels, instead of using the imperial inch size wheels like the rest of the world. So Lancia fitted 165SR400 Michelin X onto its first B10, B21 and 2 door B20 Aurelia GT cars. However Pirelli soon followed suit with their Cinturato in 1952, and soon the more sporting models such as the Aurelia B20, Aurelia GT and Aurelia B24 were fitting the Pirelli Cinturato 165HR400.

Q: Does a Lancia Aurelia fit innertubes?

A: Yes, the Lancia Aurelia was around long before the introduction of tubeless innertubes, so the wheels are not suited to be run tubeless, even if you do have a tubeless tyre they still need an innertube.
