Fiat Dino Tyres - Fiat Dino 2000 on Michelin XAS Tyres

Fiat Dino 2000 on Michelin XAS Tyres

Fiat Dino 2000 1966–1973

  • The earlier, and more numerous cars, the 1967–1969 fiat Dino 2000 coupe and spider originally fitted 185 R14 tyres.
  • Currently, Longstone Tyres would suggest the 185 HR 14 Michelin MXV-P as the best for a Dino 2000.
  • It is the carcass of these Michelin tyres that makes the handling of cars like the Dino direct and predictable.
  • If you wanted a wider, low profile tyre You could fit 195/70 R14 tyres.
  • In 1968, Pirelli developed the CINTURATO CN36 which was a period upgrade option for earlier cars, and OE on many later Dino's. Our recommended 195/70 R14 tyre is the 195/70 VR 14 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36.
  • Many Fiat Dino owners feel the 185 or 195/70R14 makes the handling of the lighter car (alloy block vs. iron block) much sweeter.
  • Fiat Dino Spider 2000 Tyres

  • You could also fit 205/70 R14 tyres, this size was fitted to the later 2400 Dino, some of the earlier Fiat 2000 cars, and some of the Dino 2000 Spider and Coupes.
  • In this size the 205/70 WR 14 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36 is the best Fiat Dino Tyre.
  • If you do want to move up to a larger 195/70 R14 or 205/70 R14 tyre size, fitting the tyre Fiat found suited the car best, the PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36, will diminish the derogatory effects of fitting a larger tyre.
  • These period tyres were developed to be fitted to a classic like the Dino and provide progressive handling, whereas a more modern tyre will be developed to fit a modern car chassis, which is completely different from a classic.
  • Our period Innertube Guides suggest that the Dino was released on tube-type wheels throughout its production, so innertubes will be required on the original wheels, even if you have tubeless tyres.
  • For these tyres, the best fitting tube is the Michelin 14F innertube.

Fiat Dino 2400 Tyres

  • In October 1969, Fiat released the new Dino 2400, which was produced until 1973. The increased engine capacity improved the low-down torque, which improved its behaviour in traffic.
  • Also in 1968, low-profile tyres were invented, and PIRELLI had introduced its CINTURATO ™ CN36, so the new 2400 Dino took advantage of this new technology.
  • The Fiat Dino 2400 fitted 205/70 R14 tyres.
  • In this size, we can recommend the 205/70 WR 14 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36, which was the original equipment 205/70 R14 Fiat Dino 2400 tyre.
  • As an alternative, there is also the 205/70VR14 Michelin XWX that was also fitted to some Ferrari Dino models.

History of the Fiat Dino

The Fiat Dino made its debut as a 2-seater Spider at the Turin Motor Show in October 1966, followed by a 2+2 Coupé form with a 270 mm longer wheelbase at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1967. The two bodies had quite different lines since they were designed and manufactured for Fiat by two different coachbuilders: the Spider by Pininfarina and the Coupé by Bertone—where Giorgetto Giugiaro had sketched it out.

The interior of the Spider was inferior to that of the Coupé. The dashboard was vinyl-wrapped, the metal-spoke steering wheel had a plastic rim, and the interior switchgear was lifted from other Fiat models. After a few months, the problem was remedied, and Spiders made after February 1967 included a wood-rimmed steering wheel as well as wood trim on the dashboard, much like the Coupé car. Radios, metallic paint, leather upholstery, and a vinyl-covered roof with roll-bar style stainless steel trim were the only options available for both models.

The car was offered with an all-aluminium DOHC 2.0 L V6 and a 5-speed manual transmission. The identical 2.0-litre engine was used in the mid-engined, Ferrari-built Dino 206 GT, which went on sale in 1968 after being pre-production at the 1967 Turin Motor Show.

Fiat stated 158 horsepower for the Fiat Dino, whilst Ferrari claimed 180 hp for the first prototype of the Dino 206 GT in 1967, despite the fact that both engines were constructed on the same assembly line in Turin by Fiat personnel with no regard for their destination. Jean-Pierre Gabriel comments in "Les Ferraris de Turin" that "la déclaration de Ferrari ne reposait sur aucun fondament technique"; Ferrari's declaration had no technical foundation. The fundamental reason for this disparity was an error in calculating the power output figures from SAE and DIN.
