History of the Fiat 130

Built from 1969 to 1976, the Fiat 130 was the first big saloon car that Fiat would produce to truly challenge Mercedes's grip on that market. With an all-independent suspension, passive rear steering and 4 disc brakes it's no wonder this was Enzo Ferrari's daily drive for a good while. The saloon was introduced in March 1969 at the 39th Geneva Motor Show, replacing the previously largest and most luxurious Fiat saloon, the Fiat 2300. The Coupé was released in March 1971, based on the same chassis, and was designed by Paolo Martin of Pininfarina, who also constructed the car. It included a button-operated device that allowed the driver to open the passenger-side door when it was modified to the 130B variant, which also featured the Coupé's bigger 3235 cc V6.

Aside from this type, two one-off versions were built: a 2-door estate called Maremma and a 4-door saloon called Opera. The saloon's production ceased in 1976, with no direct replacement, and 15,093 units were built (including 4 Familiares (station wagon/estate variants) modified by Officine Introzzo of Como). The Coupé was produced until the next year, with a total of 4,294 units produced.
