VW Scirocco Tyres

  • From 1975-1982 Volkswagen fitted the Scirocco with 155-13 Tyres.
  • The best tyre in this size is the 155R13 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67 or the 155 HR 13 Michelin XAS FF, both are high quality tyres that will allow the Sirocco the best performance.
  • These tyres would best fit an Michelin 13D innertube.
  • From 1983-1985 VW changed to 175/70 - 13 Tyres; the ideal tyre in this size is the 175/70 VR 13 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ CN36.
  • These tyres can fit a Michelin 13E innertube.
  • Our period fitment guides suggest that the Scirocco had tubeless wheels from 1977 (most likely from the start of manufacture, but we do not have a record of 1974-76 Scirocco wheel-type). Innertubes are not required for these wheels to function, so long as your wheel rims are still airtight.

History of the Volkswagen Scirocco

Volkswagen began development on the automobile in the early 1970s as a successor for the ageing Karmann Ghia coupé, naming it the Typ 53 internally. Although the Golf platform was retained to support the new Scirocco, practically every aspect of the car was re-engineered in favour of a new style (created by Giorgetto Giugiaro) that was sleeker and sportier than the Golf. The Scirocco had its world debut at the 1973 Geneva Motor Show.

The Volkswagen Scirocco MK1 was a fast compact coupé that was built between 1974 and 1982 to replace the Karmann Ghia coupé. It was built on the then-under-development Volkswagen Golf, but was tweaked along the way with a sportier driving experience in mind, and was subsequently released six months before the Golf as a covert means to address any faults that would influence the intended higher-volume Golf.

The Scirocco went on sale in Europe in 1974 and in North America in 1975, six months before the Golf, to iron out any kinks before mass manufacturing of the high-volume hatchback began. Type 1 vehicles were equipped with four-cylinder engines ranging in capacity from 1.1 to 1.6 litres, with a 1.7 litre being available in North America, all with a single-overhead camshaft and two valves for each cylinder.

Independent Tyre Test - The Results

In the world of modern tyres it is commonplace to come across a tyre test. Sadly in the world of classic tyres, the investment never seems to be there to do a proper modern tyre test. However, a German magazine in July 2016 conducted this modern tyre test using classic tyres. This classic tyre test has been translated from German to English. What is remarkable in this tyre test is quite how well the PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ CN36 classic tyre performed in the table at the end. The scores in this table are not scored in relation to the other tyres in the test, so when a score of 1 is recorded, then that is a perfect score for a classic tyre or a modern tyre. It is wonderful to see that these classic PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ CN36 tyres can give such exemplary results.
