1938 Vauxhall GY 25 HP Tyres - Wingham Cabriolet

1938 Vauxhall GY 25 HP Wingham Cabriolet

Vauxhall 25HP Model GY and GL 1936–1940

  • Vauxhall’s 25GY (medium-wheelbase) and 25GL (long-wheelbase) made between 1936 and 1940 fitted 650 - 16 GoodYear Diamond tyres.
  • There are a variety of 650-16 tyres, but we would suggest the 670 H 16 Avon Turbospeed is the best crossply for a Vauxhall 25 GY or GL.
  • The 670 R 16 Avon Turbosteel is a radial upgrade for the Vauxhall 25GY or 25GL.
  • The Vauxhall 25HP fitted tube-type wheels; the ideal tube for these tyres is the Michelin 16F innertube.

History of the Vauxhall 25HP

The Vauxhall 25 HP G-Series, including the GY and GL models, entered production in August 1936 and continued until 1939. This period marks an era when Vauxhall firmly established its reputation for building large, luxurious cars with significant road presence and performance.

The Vauxhall Big 6 25 HP, encompassing the GY and GL models, was first introduced to the public at the 1936 London Motor Show. The GY/GL model effectively replaced the previous BX/BY models in 1937. These models were available in two wheelbase lengths: a standard 111 inches and a long 130 inches, similar to their predecessors BY, BX, and BXL. Despite the similar dimensions, the chassis for the GY/GL models was completely new and featured a deep-skirted cruciform design for enhanced stability and rigidity.

The GY/GL models were powered by a naturally aspirated 3.2-litre, overhead valve 6-cylinder engine. This robust engine could develop around 80 brake horsepower, which was impressive for its time. The model GY was available in various body styles, including Saloon, Sports Saloon, and Drophead Coupé, all featuring a wheelbase of 9 feet 2½ inches. The GL model, known for its longer wheelbase of 10 feet 10 inches, catered to the Seven-Seater Saloon and Limousine variants.

The Vauxhall 25HP G series reached a total of 6,822 units when production ceased due to the outbreak of World War 2, and the car was not reintroduced post-war.
