Jensen Interceptor 1950–1976

1950–1957 Jensen Interceptor Tyres

1950–1957 Jensen Interceptor

1950–1957 Interceptor Tyres

  • The early Jensen Interceptor (up to 1950–1957) fitted 600 - 16 crossply tyres. If you desire a crossply tyre then we suggest the 6.00-16 PIRELLI STELLA BIANCA.
  • The radial equivalent size is 185-16 , we instead recommend a set of 185 VR 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67 radial tyres, which will vastly improve the handling and directional stability over a crossply.
  • The ideal innertube for these tyres is the Michelin 16F innertube.
  • We suggest 32/32 psi for crossply tyres, and 36/40 psi for radial tyres as good road Jensen Interceptor tyre pressures on 16” wheels.

1966–1973 Jensen Interceptor Tyres

  • The Jensen Interceptor made from 1966 originally fitted 670 - 15 Dunlop RS5 tyres that are no longer in production. If you want a set of crossply tyres, we suggest a set of 670 H 15 Avon Turbospeed. However, we think a car like the Interceptor deserves the best.
  • We recommend instead fitting 185 VR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67, this radial tyre will make the Interceptor much better suited to modern high-speed roads.
  • In 1968, low-profile tyres were developed, so in 1970, Jensen moved onto 205/70 R15 tyres, which were the low-profile equivalent to 185 R15.
  • The early 1970s Jensen Interceptor initially fitted ER/70 VR 15 Dunlop SP Sport Aquajet because the Dunlop was British, accessible, and good value.
  • From 1971, Jensen fitted the 205/70 R 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN12 as the preferred performance tyre for the Interceptor.
  • In the 1970s, keen for an improvement on the SP Sport Aquajet, Jaguar developed the P5 together with Pirelli, creating the 205/70 WR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO P5, this tyre would also make an excellent Jensen Interceptor tyre option.
  • Another good option would be the 205/70 VR 15 Michelin XWX.
  • For these tyres, the Michelin 15F innertube is the correct size.

1973–1976 MK3 Jensen Interceptor SP Tyres

  • Some of the later Interceptor Mark 3, Interceptor FF and R models fitted 215/70 WR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN12.
  • The best alternative Jensen Interceptor FF tyre options would be the 215/70 WR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO P5 and the 215/70VR15 Michelin XWX.
  • Our period Dunlop Innertube Guides state which sub-models of the Interceptor ran tube-type wheels and which models (and when) changed to tubeless wheels.
  • The Michelin 15/17H will be the best-fitting innertube for these tyres. We also say, if you are in doubt, fit an innertube.
  • We recommend the PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ CN12 for all Jensen Interceptors as it is W-rated, correct for the era, and made by one of the world's best tyre manufacturers, Pirelli.
  • Jensen Interceptor Tyre Pressures: We suggest a starting tyre pressure of 32/32 PSI for an Interceptor on crossply tyres, and 36/40 PSI for radial tyres.

History of the Jensen Interceptor

The original Jensen Interceptor from 1950–1957 would have little to do with the later car built under the same name. The second car to be made by Jensen post-war, there were a total of 88 of these Jensen Interceptors built. From 1966 to 1976, the new Jensen Interceptor would go through several variations and versions. Hand-built at Kelvin Way Factory in West Bromich, the car used a steel body shell that was designed by an Italian firm called Carrozzeria Touring, with some of the early Jensen Interceptor bodies being Italian-built by Vignale.
