Lord Brett Sinclair fitted 205VR15 CINTURATO ™ CN72 to his DBS

Was it because Lord Brett Sinclair fitted 205VR15 CINTURATO ™ CN72 to his DBS that he was completely irresistible to the opposite sex?

Aston Martin DBS Tyres

Aston Martin DBS 1967–1972

  • The 6 cylinder Aston Martin DBS from 1967 to 1972, like the series 2 DB6 fitted either 815V15 Avon Crossply tyres or 205 WR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN72 tyres.
  • The Crossply Avon is no longer manufactured. As Aston fitted Crossply Avon at this point, people often mistakenly think they fitted Avon radials, but that wasn’t until later.
  • Avon do also make a 205 R 15 Avon Textile tyre with a lower speed rating for a Rolls Royce Shadow 1. We would say stick with the original Pirelli Cinturato.
  • Our period fitment guides inform us that the BS was released on either normal tube-type wheels or spoked wire wheels (both requiring innertubes) on all models up to 1974.
  • For the tyres mentioned Longstone suggests the Michelin 15/17H to be the best Aston Martin DBS innertube.
  • To find out the original innertube requirements of your DBS see our Aston Martin Innertube Guides.
  • Pirellis period tyre pressure recommendation for the original radial tyre on the Aston Martin DBS6 is 35psi for both front and rear.
  • See below for Borrani wire wheel options.

Aston Martin DBS V8 Tyres

  • In 1969 when Aston Martin fitted the Tadek Marek quad-cam V8 to the DBS they changed from 6” wire wheels to 7” Alloy wheels.
  • The automobile was dubbed simply the Aston Martin V8 in 1973 and was produced for the next twenty years.
  • 1975 saw the release of the first tubeless wheels on a DBS V8, Aston would continue to run tubeless wheels and tyres thereafter.
  • The DBS V8 also fitted more modern low profile tyre technology by Pirelli and fitted a GR70VR15 Cinturato CN12.
  • GR/70VR15 classic tyres are the same as a 225/70 - 15 tyres.
  • Today Michelin make a 225/70 WR 15 Michelin XWX which has a W Speed rating, and is period to the DBS V8 from 1969 to 1972.
  • Avon also make a 225/70 VR 15 Avon ACR3, but it is a later tyre and is only capable of a V speed rating.
  • Sadly Pirelli do not yet make a 225/70VR15 Cinturato CN12, However they do make the 255/60VR15 CN12 that was fitted to the later Vantage.
  • The early alloy wheels of the Aston Martin DBS V8 should be fitted with innertubes. We suggest Michelin 15/17H innertubes.
  • For more information on innertubes, see our dedicated Innertubes page.

Aston Martin DB Tyres Explained

Aston Martin DBS V8 Tyres

The easiest way to tell the DBS and DBS V8 apart is by the wheels. Only the six-cylinder cars came equipped with wire wheels fitted with a 205HR15 tyre, of which the PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ is the only classic tyre with a suitable speed rating. The extra power of the V8 necessitated the fitment of stronger 7” alloy wheels fitted with GR/70VR15 Pirelli Cinturato Tyres. This tyre size is now available as a 225/70-15 Tyres.

The Aston Martin Vantage (sometimes called AM Vantage), produced from May 1972 until 1973 took over from the DBS, powered by the same six-cylinder engine as the DBS. A two headlamp front grille was introduced (instead of 4) with an updated grille, and wire wheels were reintroduced, with the earlier cars fitting a 205VR15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN72. This car, even though called a Vantage, was actually slower than the DBS V8 that preceded it!

The picture to the right shows the 205VR15 CN72 CINTURATO ™ HS tyre that PIRELLI put into production in 1964, which is perfect for the Aston Martin DBS. On either side of this tyre are more modern 70% profile tyre sizes that are often fitted by mistake. On the left is a 205/70VR15, which is far too small in diameter, and on the right is a 215/70VR15 which is closer in dimensions and would also be a good tyre for the Aston Martin DBS. Some cars that fitted the 205VR15 CINTURATO ™ changed to the 215/70VR15 tyre when the low profile tyre was developed at the beginning of the 1970s.

Aston Martin DBS History

The DBS, developed by William Towns, was available from 1967 to 1972, when the Aston Martin DB6 was still in production. This two-door, four-seater started off with the same engine as the DB6. This 282-horsepower engine could drive the Aston Martin DBS to a top speed of 140mph in the basic configuration. Vantage grade was offered at no extra cost, with a reported 325bhp. The car was planned to be powered by a new V8 engine, but it wasn't ready until two years after the DBS was released.

Because of its size, the DBS did not reach spectacular performance statistics. Only 800 (or so) examples of the DBS with the six-cylinder engine were built. Finally, in 1969, the V8 variant, known as the DBS V8 Series 1, became available. The engine was a brand-new twin-cam V8 capable of producing over 350 horsepower. This improved the top speed of the DBS to a respectable 160 mph!

From 1969 through 1973, just 405 examples of the DBS V8 were built. The automobile was dubbed simply the Aston Martin V8 in 1973 and was produced for the next twenty years. The AM Vantage was produced for a little more than a year, with just 70 units made.

DBS Aston Martin Tyre FAQ

Q: What tyres Did Aston Martin originally fit to their DBS Model?

A: The first DBS6, basically carried on from the DB6 series 2 and fitted either 8.15 Avon Crossply tyres, which are no longer made, or as a radial alternative the radial tyre by Pirelli 205VR15 Cinturato CN72. In 1968 when Aston developed the DBS V8 they fitted wider wheels and all the DBSV8 cars fitted radial tyres GR/70VR15 Pirelli Cinturato.

Q: Does the DBS Aston Martin need innertubes?

A:The DBS 6-cylinder model fitted wire wheels. All wire wheels should fit innertubes. The Early Alloy wheels that were fitted to the DBS V8 also need innertubes, they were originally fitted with GR/70VR15 Pirelli Cinturato. Later models ran tubeless wheels and low-profile tyres unsuitable for a tube.

Q: Did DB Aston Martin cars fit Avon Tyres?

A: Only the crossply tyres were Avon. If you wanted a radial tyre on your DB6 or DBS then they came fitted with Pirelli Cinturato CN72. Then the V8 version from 1969 came fitted with Pirelli Cinturato radial tyres as standard.
